GMC Registration: A guide for overseas doctors

GMC Registration

All doctors who wish to practise in the UK must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC Registration), regardless of where in the world they’ve trained.

In this handy guide, Remedium explain why you need GMC registration to work as a doctor in the UK and what you need to do in order to become GMC registered.

Who are the GMC?

The GMC is the governing body which regulates all doctors in the UK with the overall aim of ensuring high standards of medical practice across the country. As part of their regulatory role, they manage the UK medical register of doctors. They set and maintain the strict entry requirements for GMC registration, checking every doctor’s identity and qualifications before they are able to join.

What is GMC registration?

All doctors who wish to practise medicine in the UK must be registered with the General Medical Council. The register is there to give confidence that doctors practising medicine in the UK have the training, skills and experience needed to meet the standards that patients expect.

How can I achieve GMC registration?

There are different routes to apply for GMC registration, depending on which postgraduate qualifications you have, where in the world you qualified and your previous medical experience.

Below are some prerequisites for your GMC application:

  • You must have your credentials verified through EPIC. This includes your primary medical qualification (PMQ) and your UK accepted postgraduate qualification (PGQ). You can find out more about international postgraduate qualifications which are accepted by the GMC in our handy guide.
  • Procure a Certificate of Good standing from the relevant medical regulatory body.
  • Ensure you have acceptable scores in your IELTS/OET exams and have a valid document to prove your English Language proficiency.

Obtaining a GMC registration is mandatory for anyone who wishes to work as a doctor in the UK. However, the documents required and the registration process may vary according to where in the world you have trained. Register with us today to find out more about the process and to access relevant advice tailored for you.

Once you are certain you meet all the prerequisites, you can sign up through the GMC’s website. There, you will be assigned a unique reference number, which can then be used to verify your registration with the GMC.

To maintain your GMC registration you must pay an annual retention fee to the GMC.
