Covid-19 travel updates for overseas doctors

Last night, the UK government announced changes to the Covid-19 travel rules which opens up jobs within the NHS to thousands of overseas doctors. Countries including India, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar have moved from the UK’s Covid-19 red list to the amber list, which means that international doctors from these countries will no longer have to stay in a quarantine hotel upon arrival in the UK.

The UK Covid-19 travel list updates

From 4:00AM on Sunday 8th August, the following countries will be moving from one list to another:
Red to amber: India, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE
Amber to green: Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania and Norway
Amber to red: Georgia, Mexico, La Reunion and Mayotte
Amber-plus to amber: France

What this means for international doctors

Many of our overseas doctors relocate from India, Qatar and The United Arab Emirates and the announcement that these countries are now on the amber list represents huge financial savings for them and their families.
From 4:00AM on Sunday 8th August 2021, doctors from amber list countries will still need to quarantine for ten days upon arrival in the UK, but they will be able to do so in hospital accommodation or in their own home – at a fraction of the cost of a quarantine hotel.
Any doctors relocating from a country on the red list must still stay at a designated quarantine hotel and the cost of staying at a quarantine hotel is increasing. The price for a single adult is rising from £1,750 to £2,285 from 12th August 2021, with a second adult paying £1,430. Covid 19 doctors vaccinations will not provide quarantine exemptions as there are currently no exceptions to these rules.
