This year, we will be sponsoring 4 health camps in Mumbai, delivering preventative healthcare to some of the most impoverished areas of the city. Having recently celebrated our 10th birthday as a business, Remedium is now attempting to ‘close the loop’ in global healthcare by contributing to improved wellbeing cross-continentally.
Ethical International Recruitment
The conversation around ethical recruitment is at the forefront of discussions of healthcare and the NHS and rightfully so. International recruitment can and should be discussed openly. There is, of course, reason to be sceptical of the concept – moving doctors from across the world and plugging them into healthcare systems elsewhere, when their original locations might need them more, is a questionable practice.
We at Remedium are acutely aware of the pitfalls of international recruitment and there is no skirting around the issue. This is why we have made ethical recruitment a non-negotiable of our business since its establishment in 2013. By adhering to the NHS Code of Practice and maintaining our presence on both the CCS and HTE frameworks for ethical international recruitment, we ensure that we are pioneering global mobility of healthcare professionals whilst also maintaining safe staffing levels of doctors across the world. The sharing of information and healthcare knowledge across different healthcare systems creates a positive feedback loop of education and collaboration. It also has now enabled us to contribute to a program like this one with UDAAN.
Our mission has been singular since 2013 – to solve the UK healthcare staffing crisis. But as a global business that interacts with individuals all over the world, we decided that giving back to the communities where we operate in India is just as important. Our 10th birthday seemed like the appropriate time to launch a charitable campaign that would ultimately help improve lives outside of the UK as well.
Working with the UDAAN India Foundation
We chose to work with the UDAAN India Foundation because we believe that to improve healthcare across the globe, we need to tackle things at a grassroots level. UDAAN has been established since 2004 and have succeeded in educating thousands of children from low-income communities.
Many of the doctors that we place into the NHS at Remedium come from India, where free, quality healthcare for children can be difficult to come by. Having had an office in Mumbai operating for seven years now, we found that our goals aligned closely with UDAAN’s. Our partnership will sponsor four health camps over 2024, delivering health checks to hundreds of children and their parents. Our three main goals are:
- To improve the health of youth from low-income communities in and around Mumbai
- To reduce illness and morbidity amongst young people by preventing them from contracting preventable diseases
- To ensure early detection of health-related problems and their proper care, management, and treatment.
These camps will include tests for diabetes, CBC, Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 deficiencies, and other critical indicators of poor health. We know that this partnership will make a tangible impact on the health and wellbeing of children in lower-income communities. For many of these children, the most basic healthcare isn’t available, meaning that illnesses are often left undiagnosed until they have reached a critical stage. Paying for medical attention is, at many times, a sunk cost for families in India, where issues have already progressed to a stage where critical treatment is necessary. By focusing on preventative healthcare, we can relieve pressure on medical services that are already stressed and reduce reliance on healthcare systems. This partnership is one small step towards this goal.
Our first health camp is scheduled to take place this weekend and we couldn’t be more excited. Healthcare should, at its core, be a fundamental, accessible point of society, and we look forward to pushing this agenda further than ever before this year.
