Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month with Dr. Hansani.

South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM), first celebrated in 2020, runs from July 18th to August 17th each year. This month commemorates and celebrates South Asian culture, history, and communities and highlights the significant contributions of South Asian professionals to the NHS. It aims to understand the heritage and cultures that link the UK with South Asia, which consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

South Asian culture has influenced various aspects of British life, including food, clothing, music, language, and the overall ambience of localities. This shows the rich and proud South Asian heritage that has blended into British life and added to the nation’s diversity.

This year, Remedium showcases the story of Dr. Hansani Jayawardhana, a Sri Lankan doctor who relocated to the UK to work in the NHS. Through her journey, we focus on the important role that South Asian medical professionals in the NHS play in the growth and success of the healthcare system.

Journey and Motivations

“I came to the UK from Sri Lanka to pursue advanced medical training and as part of my post-graduate training, to work within one of the world’s most renowned healthcare systems, the NHS. The decision was pushed by my desire to gain international experience, improve my clinical skills, and contribute to a system known for its high patient care and medical research standards.”

She had multiple reasons for joining the NHS, including professional growth, quality of healthcare, and the diverse work environment.

“The NHS provides extensive training opportunities and a structured career progression which is highly appealing for any medical professional. The commitment to providing high-quality, universal healthcare aligns with my personal values and professional goals. Additionally, working in a multicultural environment allows me to interact with and learn from colleagues and patients from various backgrounds.”

Challenges and Triumphs

Relocating to a new country comes with its challenges, and Dr. Hansani’s experience was no different. She faced cultural adjustments, navigating the system, and emotional difficulties being far from home:

“Adapting to a new culture and healthcare system was initially challenging. Differences in medical practices, patient expectations, and communication styles required a period of adjustment. Understanding the structure and processes within the NHS, such as the referral system, electronic health records, and multidisciplinary team dynamics, took time. Being far from family and friends in Sri Lanka has been emotionally challenging, especially during festive seasons and personal milestones.”

Despite these challenges, Dr. Hansani has achieved a number of accomplishments, including professional development, making a positive impact on patients, and engaging in community contributions:

“Successfully obtaining GMC registration and completing various training modules have been significant milestones. Making a positive impact on patients’ lives, receiving their gratitude, and knowing that my work contributes to their well-being is incredibly rewarding. Engaging in community health initiatives and supporting South Asian patients with culturally sensitive care has been fulfilling. Travelling extensively during the past 20 months has been transformative, helping me overcome fears, adapt to new environments, and cope with missing family.”

The Influence of Heritage on Career and Patient Care

Dr. Hansani’s South Asian heritage has deeply influenced her career and approach to patient care.

She explains:

“Growing up in Sri Lanka instilled in me a strong work ethic and resilience, which have been crucial in navigating the demanding environment of the NHS. My background helps me understand and respect the cultural needs of diverse patient populations, allowing me to provide more empathetic and tailored care.”

Her cultural sensitivity and awareness of norms, dietary restrictions, and traditional health beliefs help her to build trust with patients and provide care. Also, she actively participates in health education programs within the South Asian community.

Advice for Other Medical Professionals

Dr. Hansani offers helpful advice for other South Asian medical professionals considering a move to the UK:

“Ensure you understand the GMC registration process, visa requirements, and the structure of the NHS. Be open to learning new medical practices and adapting to the healthcare system in the UK. Connect with other South Asian medical professionals and support networks to help with the transition. Be open-minded and respectful of cultural differences. Developing cultural competence will enhance your interactions with colleagues and patients. Maintain a balance to avoid burnout. Engage in activities that keep you connected to your heritage and provide emotional support. If possible, travel and explore new places. It can help in personal growth, overcoming fears, and dealing with homesickness.”

#FreeToBeMe

Reflecting on this year’s theme, #FreeToBeMe, Dr. Hansani stresses the importance of authenticity and acceptance:

“#FreeToBeMe resonates deeply as it emphasizes the importance of authenticity and acceptance. It reminds me to embrace my heritage and experiences, allowing them to enrich my identity rather than feeling pressured to conform. Traveling has also played a significant role in this journey, helping me discover and accept different facets of myself.”
