We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Inpatient Mental Health to join a supportive and well-established multidisciplinary team on Rowan 2, a 15-bed adult inpatient mental health ward.
This is a substantive 10 PA consultant post, with the option of an additional 1.25 PA for on-call duties. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership for the ward, act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients, and work closely with community, specialist and inpatient services.
The role offers opportunities to contribute to service development, clinical supervision, research, audit and professional development.

Main Responsibilities

• Assess and formulate care plans for the ward caseload.
• Lead on high-risk and complex cases, including medication reviews.
• Lead ward rounds and contribute to multidisciplinary care planning.
• Act as Responsible Clinician for inpatients.
• Undertake Mental Health Act responsibilities, including preparing and presenting reports to Mental Health Act Tribunals or supervising trainees to do so.
• Work closely with families, community teams, Home Treatment and specialist services.
• Support safe discharge planning and continuity of care.
• Provide reciprocal cross-cover across other inpatient services where required.
• Develop effective working relationships between inpatient, community and specialist services.
• Represent the ward at relevant internal and external meetings and committees.
• Contribute to service development and quality improvement.
• Provide clinical advice, supervision and support to team members and trainees.
• Participate in CPD, appraisal and medical staff development.

Multidisciplinary Team

The successful candidate will work within a well-supported MDT comprising:

• RMNs and clinical leads
• Occupational therapy
• Psychologists
• Psychiatric trainees
• GP trainees
• Healthcare assistants
• Activity organisers
• Administrative and service support staff

The ward also has dedicated psychological support and access to wider specialist services.

Education, Training & Professional Development

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

• An appropriate medical degree.
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT.
• Section 12 approval.
• At least 4 years of postgraduate experience across a range of mental health settings, including community psychiatry.
• Good working knowledge of psychiatric practice, with knowledge equivalent to or working towards MRCPsych.
• Ability to provide high-quality clinical care with appropriate supervision.
• Strong analytical and clinical decision-making skills.
• Ability to lead and develop services.
• Understanding of clinical governance and the NHS modernisation agenda.
• Knowledge of research principles.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work flexibly within a multidisciplinary team.
• A driving licence or ability to travel between sites.

Desirable Requirements

• Approved Clinician (AC) approval.
• MRCPsych.
• Clinical skills required to discharge the responsibilities of the post.
• Experience working in a rehabilitation setting.
• Evidence of teaching medical students, doctors in training and multidisciplinary team members.
• Demonstrated research interest.
• Strong organisational and planning skills.
