We are seeking an experienced, motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a welcoming Acute Medicine team in a progressive service focused on high-quality patient care, flexibility, and service development.
The post offers an 11 PA substantive job plan, with a split between Acute Medicine and a specialist interest. The department supports consultants in developing interests that complement acute medical practice.

Job Overview

The successful candidate will:

• Provide senior clinical leadership across Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Emergency Department (ED).
• Lead the medical take and undertake post-take ward rounds.
• Manage referrals and ensure timely, safe patient discharge.
• Contribute to the GIM out-of-hours rota, currently structured at approximately 1 in 16 weekends per year, with no more than four weekends annually.
• Work closely with junior doctors, physician associates, nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Contribute to the education and development of postgraduate doctors in training and locally employed doctors.
• Support the teaching of medical students.
• Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and research.
• Contribute to clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation and departmental administration.

Specialist Interest

The role provides 2 PAs dedicated to a specialist interest, subject to evidence of the relevant experience and departmental requirements.
The service is open to a range of specialist interests and particularly recognises the value of:

• Frailty and Acute Geriatrics
• Headache
• Perioperative Medicine
• Acute Oncology
• Palliative Medicine
• Medical Education

Other relevant specialist interests may also be supported.

Service Development

The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to the development of Acute Medicine services, including:

• Designing and reviewing clinical protocols.
• Streamlining patient pathways.
• Reviewing patient feedback.
• Strengthening links with GPs and community services.
• Developing services across AMU, SDEC and the wider acute care pathway.
• Supporting quality improvement and service innovation.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

• MBBS and MRCP or equivalent.
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
• Broad clinical experience in General Medicine and Acute Medicine.
• Ability to lead, develop and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

• Higher degree such as MD, PhD or equivalent.
• Experience in a subspecialty interest complementary to Acute Medicine.
• Recent audit and research experience.
• Knowledge of NHS planning, leadership and service development.
