We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly driven Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in General Anaesthesia to join an experienced, energetic anaesthetic team.
This is a permanent substantive Consultant position involving regular general anaesthesia sessions across two hospital sites. The role offers a broad range of clinical opportunities, including pre-operative assessment, paediatric anaesthesia and day-case anaesthesia. The department also provides opportunities to develop specialist interests in areas such as obstetrics, paediatrics, vascular and colorectal anaesthesia, intensive care, simulation, pre-operative assessment, enhanced recovery, robotic surgery, acute pain, education and governance.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

• Provide elective anaesthetic services across the region.
• Undertake regular General Anaesthesia sessions.
• Participate in the consultant on-call rota.
• Provide anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialities, including:
• • Urology
  • Orthopaedic trauma
  • Ophthalmic surgery
  • Vascular surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Paediatric Surgery
  • ENT
  • Colorectal and upper GI surgery
• Contribute to pre-operative assessment clinics, including CPEX testing.
• Support paediatric theatre work.
• Contribute to day-case anaesthesia.
• Participate in anaesthetic services for robotic surgery across colorectal, urology, and gynae-oncology pathways.

• SPA activities include CPD, audit, teaching, research, quality improvement, leadership, simulation, and guideline development.
• Opportunities are available to develop a specialist interest and contribute to service development.

 

On-Call Commitment

The consultant commitment includes a 1-in-12 non-resident on-call rota. The consultant on-call role focuses on obstetrics and CEPOD theatres, with a dedicated separate intensive care consultant rota. Applicants should also be confident in managing paediatric theatre cases down to age two and supporting the stabilisation of critically ill children before transfer.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register.
• Royal College Diploma, such as FRCA, MRCP or FRCM.
• ALS or equivalent certification.
• APLS certification.
• Level 3 Safeguarding Children training within the last three years.
• Minimum of four years' clinical experience working in the NHS.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
• Paediatric experience.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level.

Desirable

• Higher degree, such as MD or PhD, or evidence of higher education.
• Higher Obstetric training.

 

Teaching, Research & Professional Development

The post includes opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including teaching anaesthetic trainees. The role also supports participation in research, clinical audit, quality improvement, governance and continuing professional development. The department has established educational and simulation opportunities for trainees and encourages consultants to contribute to service improvement.
