An excellent opportunity is available for a Consultant in General Medicine to join a supportive and collaborative medical team in Northern Ireland.
The role involves providing high-quality clinical care to patients referred to General Medicine, contributing to ward-based and outpatient services, participating in on-call rotas, and providing clinical leadership, teaching and service development.


Main Duties

The successful candidate will:
  • Assess and manage patients referred to General Medicine.
  • Participate in ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in the speciality on-call rota as timetabled.
  • Undertake the Medical Registrar on-call bleep, including the Stroke Lysis bleep.
  • Provide clinical leadership to doctors in training and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Provide teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
  • Discuss management and discharge plans with patients and relatives.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams involved in patient care.
  • Lead discharge planning and communicate effectively with community teams, including electronic discharge summaries.
  • Undertake appropriate administrative duties relating to patients under the care of the Consultant Physician.
  • Adhere to professional, clinical policies and procedures within the department.
  • Contribute to research and service development.
  • Participate in the appraisal process and regular review of the job plan.
  • Attend departmental and inter-departmental meetings.
  • Contribute to the departmental induction programme.
  • Attend speciality educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
  • Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in line with relevant Royal College requirements.
  • Participate in clinical audit and quality assurance activities.
  • Contribute to regular speciality governance meetings.
  • Support the implementation of departmental developments and agreed quality-improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain professional standards in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice.
  • Undertake other duties reasonably associated with the role, including maintaining appropriate records, preparing reports, delegating tasks appropriately and maintaining clinical knowledge and skills.


Clinical Leadership & Team Working

The Consultant will work collaboratively with colleagues across General Medicine and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Responsibilities include:
  • Providing senior clinical decision-making and leadership.
  • Supporting doctors in training.
  • Promoting high standards of clinical care.
  • Working effectively with nursing, allied health professionals and community teams.
  • Contributing to service development and quality improvement.
  • Supporting effective patient flow and discharge planning.


Teaching & Education

Supervision & Support

The appointee will work daily alongside experienced Consultant Physicians. Clinical advice, support and supervision will be available during normal working hours, with senior on-call Consultant Physician support available outside these hours.


Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Medical degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant clinical experience in General Medicine.
  • Ability to assess and manage patients across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to teaching and training.
  • Commitment to clinical audit, research and service development.
  • Ability to provide clinical leadership to doctors in training.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
