An excellent opportunity is available for an Emergency Medicine Specialist to join an established Emergency Department in New Zealand. The role offers the opportunity to deliver senior emergency care, support junior medical staff, contribute to clinical education, and participate in quality improvement and service development.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

• Provide timely and effective emergency medical care.
• Assess, diagnose and develop appropriate management plans for patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
• Ensure patients receive appropriate treatment according to triage requirements, Emergency Services protocols and clinical practice standards.
• Provide advice, direction and guidance to resident medical officers and other clinical staff.
• Manage patients requiring observation, including reassessment, investigation and treatment.
• Ensure patients requiring admission have appropriate documentation completed and are formally transferred to the admitting clinical team.
• Provide appropriate clinical documentation, including diagnoses, investigations, management decisions and medication information.
• Participate in Emergency Department clinical audits and quality improvement activities.
• Contribute to the development of departmental policies, systems and processes.
• Participate in clinical governance, credentialing and quality assurance activities.

Teaching & Training

The Specialist will contribute to the education and development of the wider clinical team, including:

• Supervising and guiding junior doctors working in the Emergency Department.
• Participating in tutorials and teaching sessions for junior medical staff.
• Supporting the education and development of nursing staff.
• Participating in in-service education programmes.
• Supporting the continuing medical education of resident medical officers.

Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement

The role includes an active commitment to clinical governance and quality assurance.
The successful candidate will:

• Participate in clinical audit and review of Emergency Department practice.
• Contribute to quality assurance systems and clinical review processes.
• Participate in reviews of patient outcomes, including case reviews and mortality reviews.
• Support the development and maintenance of appropriate medical standards of practice.
• Participate in credentialing and professional standards processes.
• Contribute to departmental policy and service development.

Education, Research & Professional Development
