An excellent opportunity is available for a Consultant in General Internal Medicine (GIM) to join an established clinical team in Ireland.
This Consultant-level position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality General Internal Medicine services. A further subspecialty alongside GIM is welcomed, and the hospital is open to discussing the successful candidate's special interests and incorporating these into the job plan.

The Role

The successful Consultant will help develop and deliver General Internal Medicine services, working collaboratively with the existing Consultant team and wider multidisciplinary colleagues.
Key responsibilities include:

• Providing Consultant-level care in General Internal Medicine.
• Participating in the development and delivery of the clinical service.
• Undertaking duties appropriate to the Consultant's area of clinical competence.
• Providing specialist consultation to colleagues when requested.
• Supervising and taking responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant hospital doctors under the Consultant's care.
• Contributing to clinical service planning and development.
• Working within the hospital's agreed service plans and clinical directorate structures.
• Participating in clinical audit and proactive risk management.
• Supporting the collection and production of clinical information required for service planning and management.
• Contributing to the development of management and representative structures within the service.

The position offers flexibility to incorporate an area of special interest into the job plan, which can be discussed with the candidate during the interview process.
A further subspecialty alongside General Internal Medicine is welcomed, making this an attractive opportunity for Consultants who wish to maintain or develop a complementary area of expertise.

Teaching & Education

The successful Consultant will have regular teaching commitments, including:

• Ward-based teaching of undergraduate medical students.
• Participation in lecture programmes for 2nd, 4th and 5th year medical students.
• Teaching other groups as required, including speciality juniors and specialist nurses.

Clinical Governance & Audit

The Consultant will be expected to contribute actively to clinical governance and quality improvement activities, including:

• Clinical audit.
• Proactive risk management.
• Review and improvement of clinical services.
• Production of data and information required for service evaluation.
• Compliance with relevant regulatory, statutory and organisational policies.
• Supporting evidence-based improvements to patient care.

Management Responsibilities

All Consultants are expected to participate in the wider management and development of the clinical service.
Responsibilities include:

• Attending monthly Clinical Directorate meetings.
• Sharing administrative duties within the Directorate.
• Contributing to service development.
• Supporting the existing clinical team through mentoring.
• Participating in joint clinics and one-to-one clinical support where appropriate.
• Providing individual case management for complex cases.
• Identifying development needs within the team.
• Contributing to CPD opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via email and telephone.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

• Consultant-level experience in General Internal Medicine.
• Specialist registration in General Medicine with the Medical Council in Ireland, or eligibility meeting the relevant registration requirements.
• Full IMC registration and licence to practise at the time of shortlisting.
• Alternatively, candidates currently on the GMC Specialist Register may be considered, subject to the applicable requirements.
• Relevant postgraduate qualifications.
• Relevant clinical experience in General Internal Medicine.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to clinical governance and audit.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to supervise and support non-Consultant hospital doctors.
• Commitment to teaching and professional development.

Desirable

The following would be advantageous:

• A further subspecialty alongside General Internal Medicine.
• Additional relevant postgraduate qualifications.
• Experience in service development.
• Experience in clinical leadership or management.
