An excellent opportunity is available for a Substantive Consultant in General Medicine with a Special Interest to join a well-established and forward-thinking medical team in South East England.
The role offers the opportunity to provide consultant-level care across general medicine and acute medical services, while developing a specialist interest in areas such as Same Day Emergency Care, Enhanced Level Care, Cardiology, Renal Medicine, Care of the Elderly, Acute Medicine or Respiratory Medicine. The job description also highlights strong opportunities for service improvement, education, research and clinical leadership.
The service is part of a large acute and community healthcare organisation serving a substantial population across South East England, with established links to university-based teaching and research. The department has a strong focus on quality improvement, innovation, patient safety and multidisciplinary working.


Main Duties

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide consultant oversight of general medical patients.
  • Take clinical and administrative responsibility for patients on the designated general medical ward.
  • Provide consultant-level input into the management of emergency admissions.
  • Cover outlying medical patients where required.
  • Assess patients and determine the appropriate pathway, including:
    • Ongoing inpatient care
    • Short-stay admission
    • Ambulatory care
    • Discharge
  • Support the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service and medical take.
  • Contribute to the development and review of protocols for managing emergency admissions.
  • Ensure appropriate and sensitive management of resuscitation and end-of-life care.
  • Work closely with nursing, allied health professionals and medical colleagues to provide safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Participate in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota.

 

Teaching & Training

The Consultant will play an important role in the education and development of the wider medical team.
Responsibilities include:
  • Clinical and educational supervision of trainees.
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  • Teaching, examination and accreditation duties where required.
  • Supporting the development of resident medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
 

Service Development & Clinical Governance

The post-holder will be expected to contribute actively to the ongoing development of the medical service through:
  • Clinical audit.
  • Quality improvement initiatives.
  • Development and implementation of new ways of working.
  • Clinical pathway development.
  • Service modernisation and improvement.
  • Effective use of departmental resources.
  • Participation in clinical governance and risk management.
  • Contribution to clinical research and clinical trials.
The department has a strong established culture of quality improvement, with improvement methodology embedded within its wider service strategy.

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine (GIM) via:
    • CCT, with CCT date within 6 months of interview; or
    • Portfolio Pathway, with submission within 6 months.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Educational Supervisor qualification.
  • Extensive experience in General Medicine.
  • Wide experience of General Internal Medicine, including multidisciplinary working.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.
  • Evidence of commitment to clinical governance, audit and improvement of clinical practice.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification such as MSc, MD or PhD.
  • Teaching or education qualification.
  • Appraiser qualification.
  • Leadership and/or clinical management qualification.
  • Out-of-programme management experience.
  • Significant clinical leadership experience.
  • Research experience and involvement in clinical trials.
  • Experience or interest in service modernisation and improvement.
  • Experience with quality improvement methodologies and/or research.
  • Committee, conference or workshop experience.
