An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant Gastroenterologist with a subspecialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to join an established and supportive gastroenterology team in Greater London.The successful candidate will join a team of experienced gastroenterologists and will play a key role in the ongoing development of the IBD service. The department has an established multidisciplinary IBD service supported by experienced IBD specialist nurses, regular MDT meetings and close links with colorectal surgical and radiology colleagues.
The post is substantive and full-time, with 10 programmed activities, and the role focuses on complex IBD care alongside general gastroenterology and endoscopy.
The successful candidate will be expected to work across three hospital sites within the region.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide independent consultant-level care for patients with complex IBD.
- Actively contribute to IBD multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Support and train IBD specialist nurses.
- Develop and improve IBD care pathways.
- Foster close multidisciplinary working within the IBD team.
- Support networking with internal and external healthcare providers.
- Contribute to IBD data collection, audit and database development.
- Implement national IBD standards, guidance and relevant GIRFT recommendations.
- Develop the departmental IBD research portfolio.
- Maintain appropriate CPD and professional development.
- Undertake elective and emergency/inpatient endoscopy.
- Provide general gastroenterology outpatient clinics with a particular focus on IBD.
- Provide GP referral vetting, advice, and guidance.
- Participate in inpatient gastroenterology care and ward referrals.
- Provide consultant supervision and teaching for doctors in training.
- Participate in clinical governance, clinical risk management and departmental audit.
Gastroenterology & Endoscopy
The role includes a broad range of general gastroenterology responsibilities, including:
- Diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
- Elective and inpatient emergency endoscopy
- Approximately two endoscopy lists per week
- General gastroenterology outpatient clinics
- New and follow-up patient appointments
- Investigation and results management
- GP and A&E referral vetting
- Endoscopy referral vetting
- GP advice and guidance
- Inpatient gastroenterology reviews and referrals
- Formal and informal clinical supervision of doctors in training
IBD Service
The IBD service is an important focus of the post. The department has experienced IBD specialists and specialist nurses, with regular IBD meetings, biologic MDTs and surgical/radiology MDT collaboration. The service manages a significant cohort of patients receiving biologic therapies and contributes to the National IBD Registry.The successful candidate will help:
- Manage complex IBD independently.
- Develop new treatment and care pathways.
- Improve service capacity and patient pathways.
- Support IBD standards and quality improvement.
- Strengthen the service's research activity.
- Contribute to regular complex-case MDT discussions.
On-Call & Inpatient Responsibilities
The post includes a 1:14 gastroenterology on-call rota, covering GI bleeds and other endoscopy emergencies.Weekend commitments include six hours on site on Saturday and Sunday, followed by overnight on-call cover for endoscopy emergencies. Anaesthetic services and specialist endoscopy nursing staff provide out-of-hours endoscopy support.
The post-holder will also participate in gastroenterology ward cover, with the detailed job plan providing for two weeks of ward cover in every 14-week cycle.
There is no requirement to participate in the acute General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call service.
Research, Teaching & Development
The gastroenterology department has an active research programme and participates in NIHR gastroenterology portfolio studies, supported by a dedicated gastroenterology research nurse. The successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to research and develop the department's IBD research portfolio.There are also opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including the education and supervision of junior doctors, medical students and allied health professionals.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Completed CCT in Gastroenterology and General Medicine, or within 6 months of completion.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
- Competent consultant-level general gastroenterology clinician and endoscopist.
- JAG-certified independence and demonstrated proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
- Extensive clinical experience managing patients with IBD within the NHS.
- Knowledge of national IBD standards, guidelines and current developments in IBD management.
- Experience of IBD research, audit or quality improvement.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective time management and organisational skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing service demands.
Desirable:
- MD or PhD.
- Experience of IBD surveillance endoscopy.
- Experience treating IBD in adolescents.
- Experience managing complex IBD in a tertiary-centre setting.
- Endoscopy Train the Trainers qualification.
- Attendance at IBD-focused conferences or seminars.
- Evidence of published research in IBD.
- Engagement with professional IBD networks and organisations.
- Documented team leadership experience.
