An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in Urology and Lower GI/Colorectal cancers to join an established and forward-looking oncology team in North East England.
This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity within a busy cancer service, with the successful candidate joining experienced urology and colorectal oncology teams. The role focuses on the management of urological and colorectal malignancies, with flexibility regarding tumour-site interests for the right candidate.
The post is offered at 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), although applications from candidates seeking less-than-full-time work will also be considered.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide specialist clinical oncology care for patients with urological and colorectal malignancies.
- Manage patients across new-patient, treatment review, and follow-up clinics.
- Conduct SACT/review clinics and contribute to treatment planning and prescribing.
- Participate in weekly Urology and Lower GI MDTs.
- Provide inpatient oncology reviews when required.
- Undertake clinical administration associated with SACT prescribing and patient correspondence.
- Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
- Cover colleagues during annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Participate in departmental and Directorate meetings.
- Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement and clinical governance.
- Participate in research and support recruitment into clinical trials.
- Contribute to continuing professional development and teaching.
- Participate in the consultant oncology on-call rota.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Full GMC registration
- FRCR, if applying as a Clinical Oncologist
- MRCP or equivalent General Medical qualification
- Relevant CCT or equivalent
- GMC Specialist Register entry or eligibility within 6 months of appointment
- General oncology experience
- Specialist training in urological and colorectal malignancies
- Evidence of clinical audit
- Good leadership and organisational skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare professionals
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Caring and supportive approach
- Ability to work under pressure
- Commitment to training and continuing medical education
- Flexibility to respond to changing service requirements
Desirable:
- Training in appraisal techniques
- Management training
- Experience in research or innovative service development
- Management and administrative experience
- Experience in counselling
- Additional teaching experience
Key Requirements
- Full GMC registration
- FRCR for Clinical Oncology
- MRCP or equivalent General Medical qualification
- Relevant CCT or equivalent, confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the date of appointment
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of appointment
- Site-specialist training in urological and colorectal malignancies
- General oncology experience
- Evidence of clinical audit
- Strong leadership, organisational and management skills
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
