An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join a motivated and compassionate multidisciplinary team in South West England.

The successful candidate will provide inpatient and outpatient Stroke Medicine services, contribute to the continued development of stroke pathways and work collaboratively across acute, community and regional services.
The role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to service transformation, patient outcomes and the future strategic direction of Stroke Medicine across the region.


Main Duties

  • Provide comprehensive acute, hyperacute and rehabilitation Stroke Medicine services.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient Stroke Medicine care.
  • Undertake TIA clinics and contribute to stroke MDT activity.
  • Undertake infrequent inpatient General Medicine duties.
  • Participate in the 1 in 11 acute medical on-call rota.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff.
  • Contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance, CPD and quality improvement.
  • Support service development and pathway transformation.
  • Contribute to research and evidence-based practice.


Stroke Service

The service provides a comprehensive stroke pathway incorporating:
  • Hyper Acute Stroke care
  • Acute Stroke care
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • 24/7 thrombolysis service
  • TIA outpatient services
  • Stroke Early Supported Discharge
  • Rapid access neurovascular clinics
  • CT perfusion imaging
  • Regional neuro-intervention links
The service uses Rapid AI and CT perfusion imaging to support rapid assessment and decision-making for hyperacute stroke, including identifying patients who may benefit from reperfusion treatment.
The department has demonstrated strong performance in the national stroke audit, with the detailed JD stating that it has consistently achieved SSNAP Level A in recent audits.


Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine and either Stroke Medicine or Geriatrics.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Recognised training in General Internal Medicine and Care of the Elderly with experience in Stroke Medicine.
  • High level of clinical experience and competence in GIM, Care of the Elderly and Stroke Medicine.
  • Competence in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of acute stroke.
  • Experience teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to the speciality.
