An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Pain Medicine to join a well-established Anaesthesia and Pain Management service in the East of England.
This substantive Consultant post combines specialist Pain Medicine with General Anaesthesia, offering regular pain clinics, interventional pain sessions and anaesthetic theatre commitments alongside participation in the general consultant on-call rota. Working within a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will contribute to the assessment and management of patients with acute and chronic pain conditions while supporting service development, education, research and clinical governance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver Consultant-led Pain Medicine services through outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary pain management programmes.
- Assess, investigate and manage patients with acute and chronic pain conditions using evidence-based treatment strategies.
- Perform interventional pain procedures appropriate to training and experience.
- Provide General Anaesthesia for adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialities.
- Participate in the Consultant General Anaesthesia on-call rota.
- Work collaboratively with specialist pain nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Support acute pain services and provide specialist advice for complex pain management.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and discussions of complex cases.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and pain management pathways.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, appraisal and risk management activities.
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision and mentoring.
- Participate in research, innovation and continuing professional development.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with GMC standards and departmental policies.
- Contribute to departmental leadership and participate in consultant and service meetings.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia (or eligible within six months of interview).
- FRCA or equivalent qualification.
- FFPMRCA (Faculty of Pain Medicine) or equivalent.
- Appropriate specialist training and experience in Pain Medicine.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- MD, PhD, MSc, PGDip, PGCert or another relevant postgraduate qualification.
- ALS, EPLS or ATLS Instructor status (or equivalent).
Experience
Essential
- Extensive Consultant-level or equivalent experience in General Anaesthesia.
- Significant experience managing patients with chronic and complex pain conditions.
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary Pain Medicine services.
- Experience providing anaesthesia across a broad range of adult surgical specialities.
- Experience performing interventional pain procedures.
- Experience participating in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
- Experience teaching and supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Desirable
- Post-CCT experience in Major General Anaesthesia.
- Experience leading Pain Medicine service development.
- Research experience or peer-reviewed publications in Pain Medicine or Anaesthesia.
