An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Electrophysiology to join a modern cardiology service in Ireland.
The successful candidate will provide expert consultant-led care for patients with complex cardiac rhythm disorders, delivering advanced electrophysiology procedures within a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratory. Working as part of a multidisciplinary cardiology team, the post holder will contribute to service development, clinical governance, teaching and the continued delivery of high-quality, patient-centred cardiovascular care.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive Consultant Cardiology service with a specialist focus on Cardiac Electrophysiology.
  • Independently assess, investigate and manage patients with cardiac arrhythmias and other complex cardiovascular conditions.
  • Perform advanced electrophysiology procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Undertake catheter ablation procedures for a range of cardiac rhythm disorders.
  • Perform cardiac device implantation, including pacemakers, ICDs and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices where appropriate.
  • Interpret electrophysiology studies and formulate evidence-based treatment plans.
  • Provide specialist care within the cardiac catheterisation laboratory and take full clinical responsibility for patient management during procedures.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists, specialist nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of electrophysiology services.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise and support non-consultant hospital doctors, specialist registrars and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in teaching, training and continuing professional development activities.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with national professional and regulatory standards.


Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC), or currently in the process of obtaining Specialist Registration.
  • Alternatively, Specialist Registration with the UK General Medical Council (GMC) or an equivalent EU/EEA specialist registration recognised for practice in Ireland.
  • Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST/CCT) or equivalent in Cardiology.
  • Fellowship or equivalent higher qualification in Cardiology.

Desirable

  • Formal Fellowship or subspecialty training in Cardiac Electrophysiology.
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications relevant to Cardiology or Electrophysiology.


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive Consultant-level experience in General Cardiology.
  • Significant experience in Cardiac Electrophysiology.
  • Expertise in diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures.
  • Experience performing catheter ablation procedures.
  • Experience in permanent pacemaker implantation.
  • Experience in implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation.
  • Experience in cardiac rhythm device management and follow-up.
  • Experience working within a modern cardiac catheterisation laboratory.
  • Ability to independently manage complex electrophysiology patients and assume full clinical responsibility during invasive procedures.

Desirable

  • Experience introducing or expanding Electrophysiology services.
  • Participation in national or international electrophysiology registries or research.

  • Research experience in Cardiology or Electrophysiology.
  • Publications or presentations at national or international cardiology meetings.
  • Experience participating in clinical trials or service evaluation projects.
