An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a well-established and progressive respiratory department in Greater London. This post is available on a full-time or part-time basis. It offers the chance to join a friendly, supportive consultant team with strong subspecialty services, excellent junior feedback, and opportunities to develop specialist interests.

The department currently has seven consultants and is looking to recruit an additional consultant to support service expansion and ongoing development. The team has established expertise in severe asthma, ILD, pleural disease, bronchoscopy/EBUS, medical thoracoscopy, TB, sleep medicine and NIV, with strong research links and a well-developed MDT structure.

Main Duties of the Role

The successful candidate will:

• Provide direct clinical care across the Respiratory Medicine service, contributing to diagnosis, investigation, treatment and ongoing management of respiratory patients.
• Share the consultant workload equally within the department and provide comprehensive senior clinical cover.
• Support general respiratory services, the lung cancer service, and the pleural service
• Participate in outpatient clinics, bronchoscopy and pleural sessions, inpatient ward cover, MDT meetings and in-reach activity.
• Work closely with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver a high-quality, patient-centred respiratory service.
• Provide prompt specialist advice for patients under other specialities when required.
• Take continuing responsibility for patients under their care, including safe handover and ongoing management.
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, education, research and service development.
• Participate in the training and supervision of junior medical staff and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Support recruitment, mentoring, appraisal and development of multidisciplinary team members.

Service Development Opportunities

The new consultant will support and help shape further development of the department, including:

• Expansion of specialist respiratory management for acute respiratory admissions
• Development of 7-day respiratory services
• Strengthening the lung cancer pathway and maintaining 2-week wait performance
• Further enhancement of the pleural and medical thoracoscopy services
• Expansion of integrated respiratory care and outreach work with primary care and community teams
• Potential development of additional specialist clinics such as sleep medicine, bronchiectasis and pulmonary hypertension

Team Structure & Clinical Environment

The successful candidate will join a department with a strong MDT and junior support structure.

The respiratory team currently includes seven consultants with subspecialty interests across:

• Severe asthma
• ILD
• TB
• COPD
• Interventional pleural and bronchoscopic work
• Lung cancer
• NIV
• Sleep medicine
• Research and medical leadership

The department is also supported by:

• 2 Respiratory Speciality Registrars
• 1 Renal Speciality Registrar
• 3 F1 / Trust Grade F1 level doctors
• 3 IMT / GPST doctors

Person Specifications

Requirements

Essential

Applicants must have:

• Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) by the time of taking up the post, or accreditation for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
• Full GMC registration
• Experience in providing direct clinical care
• Active participation in clinical audit
• Experience in developing effective and collaborative working relationships
• Strong clinical skills in the management and treatment of patients admitted under the speciality
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and manage competing demands in a busy acute environment
• Medical and non-medical undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
• Knowledge of the NHS Constitution, GMC professional standards, and the wider Trust / NHS environment
• Evidence of active participation in leadership and management activities
• Evidence of research activity and willingness to continue contributing to research
• Flexibility to meet the needs of the team, service and organisation
