An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and highly motivated Consultant Stroke Physician to join a well-established and high-performing Stroke Service in North West England. This role offers the chance to work within a dedicated multidisciplinary team committed to delivering evidence-based, end-to-end stroke care while contributing to the ongoing development and strategic growth of stroke services across the region.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive consultant-led care across hyper-acute, acute, rehabilitation, and community stroke pathways
• Participate in the Consultant of the Week model, leading daily ward rounds within the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Unit
• Deliver senior medical input into acute stroke assessment and thrombolysis services
• Support rapid access TIA and stroke review clinics with access to same-day imaging services
• Participate in the specialist stroke on-call rota, including remote hyper-acute stroke assessment and thrombolysis advice
• Undertake responsibility for ongoing care of stroke rehabilitation and step-down patients
• Provide clinical leadership and support to the wider multidisciplinary team
• Supervise and train junior doctors, specialist nurses, and other healthcare professionals
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives
• Participate in teaching, education, and continuing professional development activities.


About the Stroke Service

The service provides a comprehensive stroke pathway covering hyper-acute care, acute stroke management, rehabilitation, TIA assessment, and community stroke services. The department consistently performs strongly within national stroke audits and has established access to advanced stroke interventions and specialist neurological support.

The service includes:
• Dedicated Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU)
• Acute Stroke Unit
• Stroke Rehabilitation Services
• Daily Rapid Access TIA Clinics
• Advanced CT, CTA, CTP, and MRI imaging pathways
• 24/7 thrombectomy access through regional neuroscience networks
• Specialist Stroke Nurse and Nurse Consultant support
• Dedicated Stroke Research Team and Research Nurse support.

The successful candidate will work alongside:
• Consultant Stroke Physicians

• Specialist and Junior Resident Doctors

Research, Education & Leadership

The department actively supports consultants wishing to develop specialist interests in:

• Clinical Governance Initiatives

The service has a strong academic culture, with dedicated research support, and it encourages participation in national and regional stroke improvement programmes.


Teaching & Training

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Supervise and support doctors in training
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
• Deliver tutorials, case discussions, journal clubs, and educational sessions
• Participate in continuing medical education activities
• Support multidisciplinary learning and workforce development.


Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• Full GMC Registration
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register through CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights pathway
• MRCP or equivalent qualification
• CCST/CCT in General Medicine and Stroke Medicine (or within six months of award)
• Extensive experience in the management of stroke patients
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills
• Teaching experience or a strong interest in medical education
• Evidence of clinical audit participation and governance involvement
• Research activity and publications relevant to stroke medicine
• Evidence of management skills and leadership capability
• Ability to work effectively within and lead multidisciplinary teams.

 

Desirable

• Higher degree in Stroke Medicine, such as MD, PhD, or equivalent
• Recognised teaching skills qualification
• Recognised communication skills training
• Leadership development qualification or recognised leadership course
• Additional experience in service transformation, education, or academic stroke medicine.
