An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Mental Health Services within a well-established multidisciplinary inpatient mental health service in Wales. The post is a replacement Consultant position joining an experienced team responsible for delivering Acute Adult Mental Health services across the region.

This Consultant Psychiatrist role offers the opportunity to work within a highly supportive inpatient mental health service that provides acute admission, assessment, and treatment for adults with complex psychiatric conditions. The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative consultant team within Adult Mental Health Services while contributing to service development, multidisciplinary leadership, education, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Consultant Psychiatrist will:

• Provide Consultant-led Acute Adult Mental Health inpatient services
• Undertake psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning
• Provide clinical leadership for acute adult psychiatric inpatients
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualised care pathways
• Conduct ward rounds, MDT meetings, patient reviews, and risk assessments
• Support safe admission and discharge planning processes
• Participate in Mental Health Act assessments and Approved Clinician responsibilities
• Apply the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act within clinical practice
• Provide supervision and support to junior doctors and MDT colleagues
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
• Support service development and modernisation initiatives
• Participate in teaching, training, and educational supervision of junior medical staff
• Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes
• Maintain high standards of patient-centred psychiatric care
• Participate in the Consultant on-call rota

The successful candidate will join a Consultant team supporting acute admission and treatment wards within Adult Mental Health Services.

Inpatient & MDT Support Structure

The inpatient service operates through collaborative MDT working, regular ward rounds, weekly case discussions, and integrated discharge planning.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Consultant Psychiatrist will:

• Lead inpatient psychiatric management for acute admissions
• Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and treatment planning
• Support patient and family involvement in care decisions
• Manage patients detained under the Mental Health Act
• Provide Approved Clinician responsibilities where applicable
• Support crisis management and continuity of care pathways
• Participate in audit, governance, and service improvement meetings
• Provide out-of-hours psychiatric advice as part of the on-call rota
• Contribute to safe, effective, and recovery-focused inpatient care

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
• Specialist Registration in General Adult Psychiatry or eligibility for CCT within 6 months
• Approved Clinician experience or eligibility
• Experience working within Acute Adult Mental Health services
• Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and Mental Capacity Act 2005
• Excellent leadership and multidisciplinary team-working skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities
• Ability to undertake Consultant on-call responsibilities
• Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and continuous improvement
• Experience supervising junior doctors and MDT staff

Desirable

• Higher qualification or additional postgraduate qualifications
• Teaching or medical education qualifications
• Experience in service development and improvement projects
• Research experience within Mental Health services
• Experience in audit and quality improvement methodologies
• Leadership experience within Adult Psychiatry services
• Interest in clinical innovation and modern mental health pathway
