An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join an Integrated Learning Disabilities Service in Greater London.

This community-based consultant post has been created through service development. It offers the chance to work within a progressive multidisciplinary service supporting adults with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs.

The successful candidate will provide senior clinical leadership, contribute to pathway development, and support high-quality, person-centred care across community services.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant psychiatric care for adults with learning disabilities.
  • Deliver specialist assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care.
  • Manage complex mental health presentations using a bio-psycho-social model.
  • Provide medication reviews and risk management plans.
  • Ensure safe discharge planning and continuity of care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records.

Legal / Professional Responsibilities

  • Work in accordance with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding frameworks.
  • Maintain Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician responsibilities.
  • Ensure confidentiality and compliance with professional standards.

Leadership / Management

  • Provide clinical and professional leadership within the Learning Disabilities service.
  • Contribute to service performance, redesign, and pathway priorities.
  • Support efficient service delivery alongside managers and consultant colleagues.
  • Participate in financial and operational planning where appropriate.

MDT / Partnership Working

  • Work closely with psychologists, nurses, therapists, social workers, support staff, and carers.
  • Maintain strong relationships with GPs, commissioners, social services, and voluntary sector partners.
  • Promote equitable access to services for diverse communities.

Teaching / Governance / Development

  • Supervise junior medical staff and ensure compliance with training requirements.
  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Participate in appraisal, job planning, CPD, and academic programmes.
  • Contribute to audit, research, and service evaluation.

Person specification

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • GMC Specialist Register in Learning Disabilities Psychiatry or within 6 months
  • Approved Clinician status
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Excellent specialist psychiatric knowledge
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to manage complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Leadership and teamworking skills
  • Ability to teach and supervise others

Desirable

  • Higher degree in education/research/management
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Broad NHS or comparable specialist experience
  • Research or service evaluation experience
  • Evidence of achievements in education, research, or audit
  • Strong CPD engagement
  • Good standing with GMC
  • Driving licence or alternative transport arrangements
