An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Speciality Doctor in Anaesthetics to join a forward-thinking and supportive department in North West England.

This substantive role is ideal for appropriately trained clinicians seeking to further develop their experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine, and General Anaesthesia within a busy acute hospital setting.

The department has a strong reputation for education, supervision, professional development, and high-quality patient care. Full-time appointments are based on 10 Programmed Activities, with the option to increase to 11.5 PAs by mutual agreement.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe and effective anaesthetic care across theatre services.
  • Participate in an EWTD-compliant 8-week rolling rota.
  • Undertake resident out-of-hours on-call duties on a 1:8 rota.
  • On-call commitments rotate between Intensive Care Medicine and Obstetric Anaesthesia.
  • Additional weekday sessions covering ICU, obstetrics, or theatre, depending on service needs.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and comprehensive clinical records.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, and relatives.

Governance / Quality Improvement

  • Participate in departmental audit programmes.
  • Support service improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the clinical governance agenda.
  • Adapt work programmes as services evolve.

Teaching / Development

  • Participate in departmental educational sessions.
  • Support the training of junior doctors and MDT colleagues.
  • Benefit from one SPA session weekly for professional development.
  • Opportunities in ultrasound, regional anaesthesia, teaching, research, guidelines, ICU rehabilitation, and perioperative care.

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Minimum 2 years' Anaesthetic experience
  • Initial obstetric competencies achieved
  • Core-level Intensive Care training or equivalent experience
  • Competence equivalent to a new ST3 trainee
  • Understanding of audit and service improvement
  • Interest in teaching

Desirable

  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • MRCP / FCEM Primary
  • ALS / APLS / ATLS or similar courses
  • Additional ICU / Obstetric Anaesthesia experience
  • Experience teaching at different levels
  • Audit / QI project experience
  • Additional qualifications such as BMedSci / PGCE
