An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant General Surgeon to join a progressive surgical service in the East of England. This post is designed to strengthen and expand the General Surgery department, supporting high-quality elective and emergency surgical care.
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led benign general surgery and upper gastrointestinal surgical services, working collaboratively with consultant colleagues to further develop surgical pathways and patient outcomes.
This role offers a balanced mix of theatre work, outpatient clinics, inpatient management, emergency surgery, teaching, audit, and service leadership.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver elective and emergency General Surgery services.
- Participate in a 1:9 on-call rota for emergency surgical cover.
- Manage inpatient and outpatient surgical care.
- Conduct new and follow-up outpatient clinics.
- Undertake theatre sessions, including day-case and major surgery.
- Provide independent consultant decision-making for adult and paediatric emergency patients.
- Support upper GI and benign general surgical pathways.
Service Development
- Contribute to ongoing redesign and improvement of General Surgery services.
- Develop efficient patient pathways and evidence-based surgical practice.
- Support safe patient flow, theatre utilisation, and elective recovery plans.
- Participate in MDT working across surgical and medical teams.
Education / Governance / Leadership
- Teach and supervise junior doctors, trainees, and medical students.
- Act as a Clinical /Educational Supervisor where appropriate.
- Participate in audit, appraisal, governance, and quality improvement programmes.
- Support departmental leadership and strategic planning.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCS or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Experience
Essential
- Broad experience in elective and emergency General Surgery
- Independent responsibility for acute surgical patients
- Experience in benign GI and upper GI surgery
- Ability to manage both adult and paediatric emergencies
- Experience in outpatient and theatre-based practice
- Audit and governance involvement
Desirable
- GI endoscopy skills
- Higher degree (MD / PhD / equivalent)
- Previous service development experience
