An excellent opportunity has arisen for two Substantive Consultant Anaesthetists to join a large and dynamic Anaesthetics department in the East of England. These posts are ideal for candidates seeking a broad adult anaesthesia role in a supportive department that accommodates most major subspecialty interests.

Main Duties of the Job
- Provide Consultant-led anaesthesia for adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialities according to training and experience.
- Undertake a fair share of clinical responsibilities within the Anaesthetics Department.
- Participate in peri-operative assessment clinics and optimisation pathways.
- Support subspecialty anaesthetic services depending on skills and departmental needs.
- Contribute to the approx 1:20 on-call rota, covering emergency, thoracic, and vascular emergencies.
- Participate in emergency theatre shoulder shifts (approximately once every 4 weeks).
- Work collaboratively with surgical, theatre, critical care, and peri-operative teams.
- Participate actively in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, appraisal, and risk management.
- Support teaching and supervision of junior doctors, trainees, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to departmental meetings and Consultant Staff Committee responsibilities.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- FRCA or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia, or eligible within 6 months of interview
Desirable
- MD / PhD / MSc / PGCert / PGDip
- ALS / EPLS / ATLS instructor status or equivalent
Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
- Broad adult anaesthesia experience
- Ability to independently manage elective and emergency anaesthetic cases
- Experience in peri-operative assessment and optimisation
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to teaching, governance, and service development
Desirable
- Post-CCT experience in major general anaesthesia
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Research and audit portfolio
- Medical education qualifications
