An excellent opportunity has arisen for a General Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Pain Medicine to join a busy and supportive Anaesthesia and Pain service in the East of England. This is a substantive Consultant post with regular anaesthetic and pain sessions, plus participation in the general on-call rota.

The successful candidate will contribute to a high-performing department with strong anaesthetic, critical care, and pain medicine activity, and will be expected to help support clinical governance, teaching, research, and service development. Applicants with 1 year of NHS experience are encouraged to apply.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide Consultant-led anaesthesia for adult patients across a broad range of surgical specialities.
  • Deliver regular pain medicine sessions, including outpatient pain clinics and MDT activity.
  • Participate in theatre lists and pain intervention work.
  • Take part in the general on-call rota.
  • Share responsibility for the overall clinical workload of the Anaesthesia Department.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, clinical guidelines/pathways, appraisal, and risk management.
  • Participate in departmental and Consultant Staff Committee responsibilities.
  • Support teaching, supervision, and professional development of junior doctors and trainees.
  • Contribute to research and academic activity where appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia, or eligible within 6 months of interview
  • Appropriate training and experience in Pain Medicine
  • FFPMRCA or equivalent

Desirable

  • MD / PhD or other postgraduate qualification
  • ALS / EPLS / ATLS instructor or equivalent
  • PGCert / PGDip / MSc

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Broad anaesthetic experience in adult general surgery
  • Appropriate pain medicine training and experience
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of interest in education, training, research, and audit
  • Flexibility in working hours and on-call responsibilities

Desirable

  • Post-CCT experience in anaesthesia for major general surgery
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • GCP training
  • Experience in medical education
