An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a progressive Mental Health service in Wales. This post is available on a substantive or locum basis and offers the opportunity to work within an established multidisciplinary team that delivers high-quality community and crisis mental health services.

The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in service development, outpatient care, crisis pathways, and modernisation of mental health services, including support for a developing 24-hour single point of admission and triage model. Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide Consultant-led psychiatric care for adult patients in community mental health settings.
  • Undertake specialist psychiatric assessments, including history taking, mental state examination, diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Hold responsibility for outpatient caseload management and ongoing Care & Treatment Plans.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and support staff.
  • Participate in weekly MDT meetings, referral meetings and service planning discussions.
  • Conduct medication reviews, risk assessments and crisis management planning.
  • Support transitions between inpatient and community services.
  • Participate in developing crisis response and 24/7 triage pathways.
  • Supervise junior doctors and other clinicians where appropriate.
  • Participate in audit, governance, appraisal, CPD and quality improvement programmes.
  • Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate staff.
  • Participate in the Consultant on-call rota (currently 1:14 non-residential).

Person Specific

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Licence to Practise
  • On the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry or eligible for CCT within 6 months
  • MRCPsych or equivalent psychiatric qualification
  • Approved Clinician status or eligibility is desirable

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Previous NHS Psychiatry experience
  • Experience managing adult mental health patients
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience teaching undergraduate/postgraduate clinical staff
  • Experience in clinical audit and governance
  • Ability to improve and modernise services

Desirable

  • Research in mental health
  • Change management/service transformation experience
  • Mental Health Act responsibilities as an Approved Clinician
  • Leadership or management experience
