An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Acute Medicine Consultant to join a dynamic and forward-thinking acute medical team in the East Midlands.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality acute medical care across emergency and urgent care pathways, working within a modern and expanding service model. The role offers significant involvement in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), and Emergency Department (ED) in-reach, alongside opportunities in teaching, service transformation, and clinical leadership.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led care across the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Emergency Department (ED) in-reach services.
  • Deliver assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical patients, including GP and ED referrals.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including junior doctors, ACPs, and speciality teams.
  • Contribute to the organisation and management of acute patient flow, ensuring efficient admissions, discharge, and patient pathways.
  • Participate in a 1:6 weekend rota and contribute to extended consultant cover across acute services.
  • Provide supervision, teaching, and mentorship to junior medical staff and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Lead and support Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs), audits, and clinical governance activities.
  • Participate in service development, including the transformation of urgent and emergency care pathways.
  • Engage in research, education, and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Maintain high standards of clinical care, patient safety, and documentation.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • MRCP qualification.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at interview).

Desirable

  • CCT in General Internal Medicine and/or Acute Internal Medicine.
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications or thesis.

Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine.
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice and decision-making.
  • Experience in managing acute patient pathways and admissions.
  • Experience in clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs).
  • Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or Ambulatory Care.
  • Experience in service development or transformation initiatives.
