An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Acute Medicine Consultant to join a dynamic and forward-thinking acute medical team in the East Midlands.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality acute medical care across emergency and urgent care pathways, working within a modern and expanding service model. The role offers significant involvement in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), and Emergency Department (ED) in-reach, alongside opportunities in teaching, service transformation, and clinical leadership.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led care across the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Emergency Department (ED) in-reach services.
- Deliver assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical patients, including GP and ED referrals.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including junior doctors, ACPs, and speciality teams.
- Contribute to the organisation and management of acute patient flow, ensuring efficient admissions, discharge, and patient pathways.
- Participate in a 1:6 weekend rota and contribute to extended consultant cover across acute services.
- Provide supervision, teaching, and mentorship to junior medical staff and allied healthcare professionals.
- Lead and support Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs), audits, and clinical governance activities.
- Participate in service development, including the transformation of urgent and emergency care pathways.
- Engage in research, education, and continuous professional development (CPD).
- Maintain high standards of clinical care, patient safety, and documentation.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MRCP qualification.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at interview).
Desirable
- CCT in General Internal Medicine and/or Acute Internal Medicine.
- Additional postgraduate qualifications or thesis.
Experience
Essential
- Broad experience in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine.
- Evidence of independent clinical practice and decision-making.
- Experience in managing acute patient pathways and admissions.
- Experience in clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs).
- Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Experience in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or Ambulatory Care.
- Experience in service development or transformation initiatives.
