An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Occupational Health Medicine to join a well-established Occupational Health service in Northern Ireland.

The successful candidate will provide specialist occupational health advice and clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team, supporting the delivery of a high-quality, evidence-based service. The role focuses on promoting workforce health and wellbeing, supporting early intervention and prevention strategies, and contributing to the development of modern, proactive occupational health services.

This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping service delivery, improving staff wellbeing, and supporting organisational performance through effective occupational health practices.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist Occupational Health advice to staff, managers, and external organisations on complex clinical and workplace health matters.
  • Undertake clinical assessments including fitness for work, sickness absence management, ill-health retirement, and workplace rehabilitation cases.
  • Deliver a comprehensive occupational health service, including pre-employment screening, health surveillance, and wellbeing interventions.
  • Provide expert advice on infection prevention, exposure management, and workplace vaccination programmes.
  • Lead and support a multidisciplinary team working, providing clinical supervision and leadership to medical and allied health staff.
  • Contribute to the development and modernisation of Occupational Health services, including service redesign and implementation of new care models.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including HR, management, and health & safety teams, to support workplace risk assessments and staff wellbeing strategies.
  • Develop and review clinical policies, procedures, and occupational health guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and accreditation processes (e.g., SEQOHS, ISO standards).
  • Contribute to teaching, training, and supervision of medical staff and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Represent the Occupational Health service at organisational, regional, and professional forums.
  • Provide leadership in service planning, performance management, and business development activities.
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, patient safety, and professional practice in line with regulatory requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Occupational Health Medicine or within 6 months of CCT (or CESR / equivalent pathway).

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in Occupational Health Medicine at consultant level or equivalent.
  • Experience in managing complex occupational health cases, including fitness for work and workplace risk assessments.
  • Experience in clinical leadership and multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in service development, modernisation, or organisational change.
  • Experience working with external stakeholders and multi-agency services.

Skills & Competencies
