An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Diagnostic Neuroradiologist to join a large, high-performing imaging department in the West Midlands.

This is a major tertiary neurosciences and trauma centre, serving a population of approximately 1.5 million, with a rapidly expanding neuroimaging service driven by:

  • Centralised acute stroke pathways
  • Major trauma activity
  • Increasing MRI and CT demand

The department offers access to:

  • State-of-the-art imaging infrastructure
  • High-volume neuro CT and MRI workload
  • Strong academic links and research opportunities
  • Home PACS for remote reporting

Subspecialty interests are welcomed and can be incorporated into the service.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will deliver a comprehensive Consultant-level neuroradiology service, supporting both acute and elective pathways.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist diagnostic neuroradiology reporting, including: MRI brain and spine, CT neuroimaging, CT angiography (CTA), particularly for stroke.
  • Deliver acute neuroradiology cover, including stroke imaging.
  • Participate in the neuroradiology on-call rota (approx. 1:13)

Imaging & Service Delivery

  • Contribute to a high-volume service with ~63,000 neuro CT & MRI studies annually.
  • Support imaging across: Acute hospital site, Additional diagnostic centres (including Community Diagnostic Centres)
  • Work flexibly across sites as required by the service.

Multidisciplinary & Specialist Work

  • Participate in specialist MDT meetings, including: Neurosurgery, Neurology, Stroke MDTs.
  • Provide expert imaging advice to clinical teams and referring clinicians.

General Radiology Contribution

  • Contribute to general radiology reporting, including: Cross-sectional imaging, Selected plain film reporting (as required)

Job Plan

A standard 10 PA job plan includes:

Direct Clinical Care (DCC):

  • Acute MRI / CT sessions
  • Neuro CT & MRI reporting
  • MDT participation and preparation
  • On-call commitment

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA):

  • Teaching and training (~0.5 SPA)
  • Audit, governance, CPD (~1.5 SPA)

Typical structure includes:

  • Reporting sessions (CT/MRI)
  • MDT sessions
  • Acute imaging cover
  • On-call allocation (~1 PA)

Job plans are flexible and reviewed annually.

  • Participate in: Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, Specialist registrar training programmes

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Radiology
  • (or within 6 months via CCT / CESR)

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD / PhD)
  • Subspecialty neuroradiology training

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Experience in: Neuro CT and MRI reporting, Acute neuroradiology
  • Ability to independently report the full scope of neuroimaging

Desirable

  • Subspecialty expertise in: Stroke imaging, Advanced neuroimaging techniques
  • Experience in high-volume tertiary centres

Skills & Competencies

Essential

  • Strong diagnostic and analytical skills in neuroradiology
  • Ability to: Lead and manage clinical workload, work effectively within MDT environments
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and support trainees
