An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Medical Oncologist to join a well-established, research-active oncology department in North East England.
This is a newly created post supporting service expansion and workforce planning. The role has a primary focus on Breast Oncology, alongside Testicular and Renal malignancies, with strong multidisciplinary support and access to advanced oncology infrastructure.
The department delivers comprehensive cancer services, including systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), radiotherapy, and acute oncology care, serving a large regional population. There is a strong emphasis on clinical research, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Flexible, less-than-full-time work options are supported.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will deliver high-quality Consultant-led oncology services with a focus on Breast cancer and additional tumour sites.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide Consultant-level care in Medical Oncology, particularly:
- Breast malignancies (primary focus)
- Testicular and renal cancers
- Deliver systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) including:
- New patient assessment
- Treatment planning
- Review and follow-up clinics
- Manage patients across outpatient clinics, MDT pathways, and inpatient care
- Undertake oncology ward rounds and acute oncology input
Multidisciplinary & Service Delivery
- Attend and contribute to weekly MDT meetings (Breast, Urology, and related tumour groups)
- Work closely with:
- Oncology consultants
- Specialist nurses
- Radiology and pathology teams
- Acute oncology services
- Support regional cancer pathways and hub-based service delivery
On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in the oncology on-call rota (approx. 1:17)
- Provide:
- Ward round cover
- Acute oncology advice
- Assessment of urgent referrals
- Work collaboratively with the Acute Oncology Service (AOS)
Teaching, Research & Development
- Actively participate in:
- Clinical research and trial recruitment
- Audit and quality improvement initiatives
- Contribute to:
- Teaching of junior doctors and medical students
- Departmental education programmes
- Engage in service development and innovation
Leadership & Governance
- Supervise and support junior medical staff
- Participate in:
- Clinical governance and audit programmes
- Directorate and consultant meetings
- Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and appraisal

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Oncology
- (or within 6 months of CCT / CESR)
Desirable
- Higher postgraduate qualification (MD / PhD)
- Training in appraisal or educational supervision
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Experience in General Medical Oncology
- Subspecialty experience in:
- Breast malignancies
- Testicular and renal cancers
- Experience delivering systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT)
- Evidence of clinical audit participation
Desirable
- Evidence of research involvement or service innovation
- Experience in clinical trials recruitment
