Consultant Acute Medicine
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic and forward-thinking Acute Medicine service in North East England.
The department provides a comprehensive acute care service across Emergency Department interface services, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), operating seven days per week.
The service promotes a collaborative working culture supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team including physicians, advanced clinical practitioners, specialist nurses and allied healthcare professionals.

Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level Acute Medicine services, delivering high-quality care for acutely unwell medical patients.
- Undertake rapid assessment, diagnosis and management of acute medical admissions.
- Deliver clinical care across key acute services, including:
- Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
- Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
- Emergency Department medical interface
- Maintain responsibility for the clinical management of patients under their care, including inpatient and ambulatory pathways.
- Ensure safe, timely and effective patient care in accordance with national clinical standards.
The Acute Medical Unit includes 32 beds with telemetry and specialist nursing support, providing care for patients with complex acute medical conditions.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Participation in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota
- Current rota commitments include:
- 1:16 weekday on-call
- 1:8 weekend on-call
- Provide consultant-level input for acute medical admissions during on-call periods.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with Emergency Medicine, speciality medical teams, critical care services, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative clinical decision-making.
- Support the development of integrated patient pathways across acute services.
Teaching & Training
- Contribute to teaching and supervision of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
- Participate in postgraduate education and training programmes.
- Support the recruitment, mentoring and development of junior medical staff.
Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement
- Participate actively in clinical audit, governance, and service improvement programmes.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical practice.
- Maintain professional development through appraisal, revalidation and continuing medical education.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards and organisational policies.
Leadership & Service Development
- Support the strategic development of Acute Medicine services.
- Participate in departmental and organisational meetings.
- Contribute to innovation and improvements in acute patient care pathways.
Job Plan
The post is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).
Typical allocation includes:
Direct Clinical Care (Approx. 7.75 – 8.75 PAs)
- Acute Medical Unit clinical sessions

Job plans are flexible and will be discussed and agreed upon with the Clinical Director at the appointment.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine via:
- CCT
- CESR / Portfolio Pathway
- Or within 6 months of obtaining CCT
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree
- Evidence of relevant research
- Substantive NHS experience
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Ability to demonstrate independent clinical experience, knowledge and expertise in Acute Medicine at Consultant level
- Experience managing patients in acute medical settings
- Strong knowledge of clinical governance and professional practice standards
Teaching & Supervision
Essential
- Experience teaching medical students and postgraduate trainees
- Experience supervising junior doctors
Desirable
- Experience supervising specialist trainees
- Higher teaching qualification
Research & Audit
Essential
- Experience in undertaking clinical audit and presenting findings
- Ability to critically evaluate research and apply findings to clinical practice
