Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to join a dynamic and expanding Head and Neck service in North East England.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service provides specialist care across a large regional population. It works closely with a range of specialities, including ENT, Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Radiology.
The department has strong expertise in skin cancer surgery, head and neck surgery and orthognathic surgery, supported by well-established multidisciplinary team (MDT) pathways. The service offers opportunities for subspecialty development, fellowships, research and teaching, with flexible job planning to support professional development.
The department maintains close links with regional centres for head and neck cancer management and complex surgical services, enabling collaborative patient care across the wider network.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services across outpatient clinics, operating theatres and inpatient care.
- Deliver diagnosis, treatment and surgical management for a wide range of oral and maxillofacial conditions.
- Maintain responsibility for the clinical care of patients under their management, including inpatient and outpatient services.
- Undertake surgical procedures related to:
- Facial cutaneous malignancy
- Head and neck pathology
- Orthognathic surgery
- Oral and maxillofacial trauma and reconstructive procedures
- Participate in specialist MDT pathways, including Skin MDT and Head & Neck MDT services.

On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on-call rota.
- Current rota commitment: 1:7
- On-call service operates on a 7-day pattern with scheduled handover.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in ENT, Orthodontics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Pathology and restorative dentistry.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including:
- Skin cancer MDT
- Head and Neck MDT
- Orthognathic MDT
- Contribute to integrated patient care pathways across surgical specialities.
Teaching & Training
- Participate in teaching and supervision of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
- Support clinical training programmes for junior doctors and surgical trainees.
- Contribute to teaching activities delivered through regional medical school partnerships.
Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement
- Participate actively in clinical governance, audit and service improvement programmes.
- Maintain professional development through continuing medical education and appraisal.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based surgical practice.
Leadership & Service Development
- Support the development of regional Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery services.
- Contribute to departmental planning and service improvement initiatives.
- Participate in leadership roles within the department where appropriate.
Job Plan
The post is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with the possibility of up to 2 additional PAs depending on service requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Full GDC registration
- MRCS and MFDS qualifications
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery via:
- CCT
- CESR / Portfolio Pathway
- Or within 6 months of obtaining CCT
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree
- Fellowship in a relevant OMFS subspecialty
- Evidence of research activity
- Substantive NHS experience
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Ability to demonstrate independent clinical experience and expertise in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Consultant level
- Experience managing a broad range of OMFS conditions in the clinic and theatre
Teaching & Mentoring
Essential
- Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Ability to deliver clinical skills training
Desirable
- Experience supervising specialist trainees
Teamwork & Communication
Essential
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate with clinical colleagues across multiple specialities

- Participation in 1:7 on-call rota (5% on-call availability supplement)
