An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) to join a well-established intensive care team delivering high-quality critical care services across the region.

The Intensive Care Unit admits approximately 400 patients annually and currently supports Level 3 critical care beds, with anticipated service expansion in the coming years. A modern purpose-built Intensive Care Unit opened in 2025, featuring individual patient rooms, modern clinical facilities, and improved staff environments.

The ICU operates with consultant-led care during daytime hours and is supported by a robust multidisciplinary workforce including experienced nursing teams, trainee doctors and specialist clinicians. The department uses an advanced electronic clinical information system for patient records, which can also be accessed remotely.

This role provides an excellent opportunity for consultants interested in delivering high-quality critical care services while contributing to teaching, research, clinical governance and service development.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level intensive care services for critically ill patients within the ICU
  • Deliver care across daytime ICU clinical sessions and participate in the consultant on-call rota
  • Manage critically ill patients requiring advanced organ support and complex critical care interventions
  • Maintain clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in anaesthesia, emergency medicine, surgery and acute medicine
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinical decision-making and care planning

The principal responsibility of the role is to provide comprehensive critical care while supporting high-quality, multidisciplinary patient care and clinical leadership.

On-Call Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Intensive Care Medicine on-call rota (currently 1:8)
  • On-call commitment equivalent to 2.8 PAs per week
  • The on-call rota is classified as a Category A rota, requiring immediate response to urgent clinical situations
  • Provide out-of-hours consultant support for ICU admissions and critically ill patients

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with ICU nursing teams, trainee doctors, anaesthetic teams and allied healthcare professionals
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and critical care management discussions
  • Collaborate with regional services where specialist patient management is required

Teaching & Training

  • Participate in the teaching and supervision of junior doctors and trainees
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
  • Support the development of clinicians working within intensive care services

Clinical Governance, Audit & Research

  • Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives
  • Contribute to audit programmes and service development projects
  • Maintain professional development through CPD, appraisal and revalidation
  • Support evidence-based clinical practice within intensive care medicine

Job Plan

The role is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Typical allocation includes:

Direct Clinical Care

  • Intensive Care Unit daytime clinical sessions
  • ICU patient management
  • On-call duties

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

  • Approximately 1.25 PA per week allocated for:
    • Continuing professional development
    • Clinical governance
    • Teaching and training
    • Quality improvement and departmental meetings

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCA qualification
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of CCT

Desirable

  • FICE or FUSIC accreditation
  • Instructor status in recognised Life Support courses
  • Higher degree, such as MD or equivalent
  • Evidence of research within Intensive Care Medicine

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Minimum 6 months of UK experience at Consultant level in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Ability to demonstrate independent consultant-level expertise in ICM
  • Experience managing critically ill patients requiring complex clinical decision-making
  • Evidence of advanced resuscitation skills

Desirable

  • Substantive NHS experience
  • Experience contributing to ICU service development

Leadership & Teamwork

Essential

  • Evidence of leadership experience within clinical teams
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Engagement in clinical governance activities

Quality Improvement & Research

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement or audit programmes
  • Ability to critically evaluate research and apply findings to clinical practice

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Evidence supporting the training of junior doctors

Communication Skills

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex clinical information effectively
  • Demonstrates compassion, professionalism and emotional intelligence

Additional Requirements

Essential

  • Must reside within 30 minutes (10 miles by road) of the work base for on-call duties
  • CV must clearly demonstrate the experience and competencies required for consultant-level intensive care medicine practice.
