An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join an expanding Acute Medicine service within a progressive and innovation-focused department.

The postholder will play a key role across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Acute Admissions, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and post-take services, supporting a modern clinical model focused on rapid assessment, early senior decision-making, and improved patient flow.
 

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide senior clinical leadership across AMU, AAU, Acute Admissions, SDEC, and post-take/outlier activity
  • Lead consultant ward rounds and ensure early senior assessment of acute admissions
  • Support rapid assessment, clinical decision-making, and discharge planning
  • Undertake practical procedures and contribute to the management of complex acute medical patients
  • Participate in the General Internal Medicine on-call rota and weekend cover

Multidisciplinary & Service Responsibilities

  • Lead MDT discussions and coordinate patient pathways across acute and community interfaces
  • Work collaboratively with ED, speciality teams, and community partners to improve patient flow
  • Support operational management and ongoing development of Acute Medicine services
  • Contribute to pathway development aligned with GIRFT and national best practice

Teaching & Supervision

  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to trainees, fellows, and physician associates
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
  • Act as an Educational Supervisor where appropriate

Governance, Audit & CPD

  • Participate in morbidity & mortality meetings, clinical governance, and audit initiatives
  • Contribute to quality improvement and patient safety programmes
  • Maintain CPD, appraisal, and revalidation requirements
  • Support research and evidence-based practice integration into clinical pathways
 

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience

Desirable

  • Higher degree or postgraduate qualification
  • Accreditation in educational supervision

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine
  • Demonstrated leadership in acute clinical environments
  • Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff
  • Evidence of service development, audit, or research involvement

Desirable

  • Experience in frailty, ambulatory care, or SDEC models
  • Experience working within NHS acute care pathways

Clinical Audit & Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of completed clinical audit within the last 18 months
  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit processes, and NHS quality frameworks
  • Participation in service improvement initiatives

Desirable

  • Publication of audit outcomes
  • Involvement in serious incident review or patient safety initiatives

Teaching & Education

Essential

  • Experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to provide formal and informal clinical teaching
  • Educational supervision skills or accreditation

Desirable

  • Higher teaching qualification
  • Experience supervising trainees
  • Presentations or publications in medical education

Management & Administrative Skills

Essential

  • Understanding of NHS management structures
  • Evidence of risk management awareness
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills

Desirable

  • Experience in committee participation or service leadership roles
