An excellent opportunity is available for a Temporary Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join a large, well-resourced acute hospital Emergency Department in Ireland.
The successful candidate will work within a high-volume ED environment, providing consultant-led emergency care, clinical leadership, and contributing to service innovation, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Participation in the consultant on-call rota is essential.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, and management of emergency presentations
- Lead triage oversight, resuscitation, and acute decision-making across the ED
- Ensure safe and timely patient flow through the Emergency Department
- Provide senior clinical input for complex and critically ill patients
Leadership & MDT Working
- Provide clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary ED team
- Support the mentoring, supervision, and development of junior medical staff
- Promote collaborative working across inpatient specialities and community services
- Participate in consultant rotas, including on-call commitments
Governance, Teaching & Service Development
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Support departmental service development and innovation
- Participate in teaching and training of junior doctors and ED staff
- Maintain CPD and evidence-based clinical practice
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Specialist registration in Emergency Medicine with the Irish Medical Council (IMC)
- Recognised higher qualification in Emergency Medicine
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Eligibility to work in Ireland
Mandatory Role Requirements
- Must not have worked in Ireland within the previous 36 months
- Must not have applied directly to HSE roles within the previous 24 months
- Police clearance required
Desirable
- An additional higher degree or fellowship
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
Experience & Clinical Skills
Essential
- Minimum 7 years postgraduate experience, including substantial Emergency Medicine exposure
- Ability to deliver independent consultant-level emergency care
- Strong evidence-based clinical decision-making skills
Desirable
- Experience in high-volume ED environments
- Previous leadership or service development experience
