A substantive opportunity is available for a Consultant Histopathologist to join a large, forward-thinking pathology service delivering high-quality diagnostic and cancer pathway support across a busy healthcare network.
The department provides a comprehensive histopathology service with strong MDT integration, opportunities for service development, and involvement in teaching, audit, and research. Flexible working arrangements may be considered in line with service requirements.
A relocation and incentive package may be available, subject to eligibility.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide routine surgical histopathology reporting and specimen dissection as part of the departmental rota
- Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to cancer pathway diagnostics
- Lead cell pathology input for at least one MDT aligned with departmental need and specialist interest
- Refer complex or specialist cases to designated referral centres where appropriate
Service & Departmental Duties
- Deliver a high-quality consultant-led histopathology service in collaboration with colleagues
- Work within multidisciplinary teams to support the development of clinical pathways and guidelines
- Maintain adherence to departmental SOPs and professional guidance (e.g., Royal College standards)
- Support efficient service delivery through effective use of skill mix, including biomedical scientist dissection
- Provide leadership and professional support to junior doctors, laboratory teams, and administrative staff
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with tertiary centres, community services, and primary care
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Histopathology (mandatory)
- FRCPath or equivalent qualification
- CCT (or equivalent) in Histopathology (or within 6 months at interview)
Desirable
- Training in appraisal techniques
- Additional specialist qualifications or subspecialty training
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential
- Ability to independently report surgical histopathology cases
- Experience contributing to MDT cancer services
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Desirable
- Experience in service development initiatives
- Ability to independently undertake post-mortem examinations
Governance, Audit & Teaching
Essential
- Commitment to clinical governance, CPD, and quality improvement
- Willingness to support teaching and supervision of junior staff
Desirable
- Experience in appraisal, teaching programmes, or educational leadership
- Research involvement or publication record
