An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Emergency Medicine Registrar to join a well-established Emergency Department in New South Wales, Australia. This unique buddy placement allows two doctors to work identical night shift patterns, fostering a supportive clinical environment while offering excellent work-life balance.
The role provides exposure to a broad spectrum of emergency presentations, with manageable patient volumes, strong specialist support, and the potential to progress to formal Emergency Medicine training in Australia.
Main Duties of the Job
- Deliver high-quality assessment, diagnosis and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department during night shifts.
- Work collaboratively with a fellow night Registrar, nursing staff and on-call specialists to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Manage a range of acute medical, surgical and trauma presentations with appropriate escalation when required.
- Participate in clinical decision-making, treatment planning and safe discharge or admission processes.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure effective handover to day teams.
- Provide support and advice to junior medical staff and nursing colleagues where appropriate.
- Contribute to departmental quality improvement, clinical governance and patient safety initiatives.
- Engage with continuing professional development and training opportunities within Emergency Medicine.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- Eligibility for or full registration with AHPRA
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience in Emergency Medicine or Acute Care setting
Desirable
- Postgraduate Emergency Medicine qualification (e.g. MRCEM, FACEM pathway interest)
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certification
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential
- Demonstrated experience managing acute presentations within Emergency Medicine
- Ability to assess and stabilise critically unwell patients independently with senior support
- Competence in emergency procedures and acute resuscitation skills
- Strong clinical reasoning and prioritisation skills in a night-shift environment
Desirable
- Experience working within private healthcare or international Emergency Departments
- Interest in pursuing formal Emergency Medicine training in Australia (ACEM pathway)
Teaching, Audit & Research
Essential
- Commitment to clinical governance and reflective practice
- Willingness to participate in departmental teaching and learning
