An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Radiologist with expertise in Breast Imaging to join a well-established and high-performing Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology service in the East Midlands.

The post holder will work as part of a dedicated Breast Imaging team delivering a comprehensive screening and symptomatic breast service, while also contributing to the wider Diagnostic Imaging service. This role offers excellent scope for service development, multidisciplinary working, teaching, audit, and research.

Applicants must have at least 1 year of NHS experience and hold appropriate specialist registration.

 

Primary Duties of the Job

Breast Imaging Services

  • Provide a high-quality diagnostic and screening breast imaging service, including symptomatic and screening pathways.
  • Undertake breast imaging procedures, including mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided interventional procedures.
  • Participate fully in breast multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including preparation and presentation of imaging findings.
  • Support the delivery of services aligned with NHS Breast Screening Programme standards and national quality targets.

Diagnostic Radiology

  • Contribute to general and subspecialty diagnostic imaging, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and plain film reporting.
  • Support elective and emergency diagnostic imaging services as part of the wider radiology team.
  • Provide reciprocal consultant cover during periods of leave to ensure service continuity.

Clinical Governance & Quality

  • Participate actively in clinical audit, discrepancy meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance frameworks, patient safety standards, and national guidelines.
  • Contribute to service development and innovation within Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology.

Teaching, Research & Professional Development

  • Participate in the training and supervision of radiology trainees, radiographers, and advanced practitioners.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
  • Engage in research activities where appropriate and support evidence-based practice.
  • Maintain CPD in line with Royal College and GMC requirements.
 

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Registration

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCR (or equivalent)
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience / UK Experience candidates will be preferred

Clinical Experience

  • Completed approved Breast Imaging training within a symptomatic service
  • Experience working within the NHS Breast Screening Programme
  • Broad experience in diagnostic radiology, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and plain film reporting

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organisational and clinical decision-making skills
  • Commitment to patient-centred care, clinical governance, and continuous improvement

Desirable

  • Experience in advanced breast imaging techniques
  • Interest in leadership, service development, or research
  • Evidence of publications or participation in radiology research
