We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Orthogeriatric Specialist / Consultant to join a forward-thinking multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality care to older patients with orthopaedic trauma. This post has been created to strengthen orthogeriatric services and support best-practice care aligned with national standards for trauma and hip fracture management.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive geriatric assessment and ongoing medical management for frail older patients from admission through discharge, working closely with orthopaedics, anaesthetics, therapy services, nursing teams, and discharge planners.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive orthogeriatric care for older patients admitted with orthopaedic trauma, including hip fractures.
  • Deliver early comprehensive geriatric assessment, optimisation for surgery, and peri-operative medical management.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, therapists, nurses, and discharge teams to ensure safe and timely care.
  • Support delivery of care in line with BOAST guidelines and National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) standards
  • Contribute to frailty assessment, falls prevention, delirium management, and rehabilitation planning.
  • Support discharge planning and continuity of care across inpatient pathways
  • Provide clinical supervision and teaching to junior doctors and MDT colleagues.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and service development activities.
  • Contribute to on-call or cross-cover arrangements as agreed within the job plan.

Essential Requirements

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine
  • (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Demonstrable experience in Geriatric Medicine with a clear interest in Orthogeriatrics
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement

Desirable

  • Previous experience working in an orthogeriatric or trauma setting
  • Experience in frailty services, peri-operative medicine, or hip fracture pathways
  • Evidence of involvement in teaching, audit, or quality improvement projects
