We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join a high-performing, consultant-led stroke service in the South East. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in delivering hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitative stroke care within a well-established multidisciplinary framework.
The post holder will contribute to service development, clinical leadership, and high-quality patient-centred care across the whole stroke pathway, while maintaining a strong commitment to education, audit, and research.
Primary Duties of the Job
Acute & Hyperacute Stroke Care
- Provide consultant-led care for patients admitted with suspected and confirmed stroke.
- Attend and lead thrombolysis and thrombectomy calls in collaboration with the on-call stroke team.
- Coordinate thrombectomy referrals and inter-hospital transfers where required.
- Conduct inpatient reviews, including critically unwell patients and those requiring ITU input.
Stroke Unit & Inpatient Management
- Lead daily ward rounds within the Acute Stroke Unit and rehabilitation wards.
- Manage complications of acute stroke and oversee secondary prevention strategies.
- Lead best-interest discussions and complex care-planning meetings with patients, families, and MDT colleagues.
- Ensure high standards of documentation, communication, and patient safety.
Outpatient & Preventive Services
- Deliver TIA and Stroke outpatient clinics, including rapid access services.
- Provide post-discharge follow-up and long-term stroke prevention care.
- Undertake associated administrative and clinical correspondence duties.
Out-of-Hours Commitment
- Participate in the consultant stroke on-call rota, including:
- Weekend cover for new admissions and urgent TIA assessments.
- Thrombolysis on-call rota participation as part of the wider stroke team.
Leadership, Teaching & Governance
- Actively contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in local and national stroke audits and service evaluation projects.
- Support teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Engage in research activity and evidence-based service development where appropriate.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Stroke Medicine / General (Internal) Medicine or within 6 months of CCT at interview.
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD, MSc, or equivalent).
Training & Experience
Essential
- Vast experience in Stroke Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
- Experience delivering acute and hyperacute stroke care.
Desirable
- Experience in related medical specialities.
- Ability to develop a subspecialty interest within Stroke Medicine.
- Completion of relevant stroke or elderly care courses.
Audit, Research & Management
Essential
- Understanding of clinical governance and appraisal systems.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
- Awareness of current NHS initiatives and service developments.
Desirable
- Experience leading or publishing audit or research projects.
- Formal management or leadership training.
Skills & Personal Attributes
