An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Medicine with a specialist interest in Gastroenterology to join a well-established and forward-thinking clinical team in the South East. The role offers intense exposure to endoscopy services, inpatient gastroenterology, hepatology development, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic services while supporting service development, education, audit, and governance. Opportunities exist to develop a subspecialty interest, particularly within hepatology, and to contribute to pathway development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
- Provide outpatient gastroenterology services, including clinical administration.
- Manage gastroenterology inpatients and contribute to the General Medicine service delivery.
- Participate in 24-hour GI bleed service and weekend endoscopy rotas as required.
- Maintain and develop speciality interests aligned with service needs.
- Manage JAG accreditation standards and surveillance pathways for endoscopy services.
Multidisciplinary & Governance
- Attend and actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and governance meetings.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of speciality services.
- Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and audit activities.
- Implement audit and research findings into clinical practice.
Education & Supervision
- Contribute to departmental education programmes and teaching activities.
- Act as joint clinical supervisor for specialist trainees where appropriate.
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with CPD, appraisal, and revalidation requirements.
- Participate in annual job planning and performance review.
- Contribute to cross-cover arrangements and service resilience.
- Adhere to organisational policies, patient safety standards, and professional codes of conduct.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Medical degree.
- MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Medicine and Gastroenterology (or within six months of eligibility).
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree, or evidence of relevant research.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Broad training and experience in Gastroenterology and General Medicine.
- Demonstrated competence in district general hospital clinical practice.
- Evidence of independent clinical decision-making and service delivery.
- JAG accreditation or equivalent endoscopy competency with ongoing procedural activity.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Subspecialty interest (e.g., hepatology).
Clinical Effectiveness & Governance
Essential
- Understanding of clinical governance principles.
- Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
- Ability to appraise and apply clinical research.
