An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward-thinking Consultant Stroke Physician to join a progressive and expanding stroke service in the South West. The service is undergoing a major pathway redesign, with the launch of a new Hyperacute Stroke Unit alongside enhanced acute and rehabilitation stroke services.
The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping system-wide improvements in stroke care, contributing to high-quality hyperacute delivery, multidisciplinary collaboration, research, education, and service development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-led specialist stroke care across hyperacute, acute, rehabilitation, and outpatient pathways.
- Lead hyperacute ward rounds, thrombolysis assessment, and treatment delivery.
- Deliver and support rapid-access TIA clinics in accordance with national standards.
- Provide follow-up clinics and contribute to community-based stroke recovery pathways.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota, including weekend hyperacute cover.
- Maintain high standards of clinical documentation, safety, and professional practice.
Service Development & Leadership
- Work collaboratively with stroke colleagues to support the development of integrated stroke services across acute, community, and rehabilitation pathways.
- Contribute to pathway redesign, service innovation, and performance improvement.
- Provide clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
Teaching, Supervision & Education
- Supervise junior medical staff and support medical student teaching.
- Participate in departmental education programmes and training activities.
- Support workforce development and mentoring initiatives.
Research, Audit & Governance
- Participate actively in clinical governance, audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to service evaluation and improvement projects.
- Maintain CPD, appraisal, and revalidation requirements.
Professional Responsibilities
- Fulfil duties outlined in agreed job plans and personal objectives.
- Provide agreed consultant cross-cover during colleague leave.
- Participate in scheduled emergency and predictable on-call activities.
- Comply with data protection, confidentiality, health and safety, and organisational policies.
- Undertake additional professional responsibilities by agreement.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS and MRCP (or equivalent).
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of achieving CCT in Stroke Medicine or General/Internal Medicine.
Desirable
- Higher postgraduate degree.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Broad clinical experience in stroke medicine and general medicine.
- Demonstrated subspecialty interest that complements existing departmental expertise.
- Ability to deliver consultant-level independent clinical care.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Experience at locum consultant level.
Skills & Attributes
Essential
- Ability to lead and develop clinical services.
- Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage workload within a district general hospital model.
- Understanding of clinical governance and professional accountability.
