An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Geriatrician to join an expanding multidisciplinary Care of Older People service in the South West. The service comprises a large, collaborative team of consultants delivering high-quality inpatient, outpatient, and community-facing geriatric care.
The role offers flexibility to develop subspecialty interests aligned to individual expertise and service need, including frailty, dementia, movement disorders, stroke, surgical liaison, and community geriatrics. Job plans can be tailored for both newly appointed and experienced consultants.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-led specialist geriatric care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Participate in acute frailty / acute take services and seven-day working rotas.
- Provide expert assessment and management of complex older patients with multimorbidity and frailty.
- Support safe patient flow, discharge planning, and multidisciplinary working.
- Maintain high standards of clinical documentation, safety, and professional practice.
Leadership, Teaching & Governance
- Lead and contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, audit, and service development initiatives.
- Provide clinical leadership and mentoring to junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
- Support workforce development and clinical education programmes.
Service Development & Subspecialty Practice
- Develop and deliver subspecialty services aligned to personal interests and organisational priorities.
- Participate in redesigning and innovating pathways for older persons’ care.
- Support integration across acute, community, and mental health interfaces.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT).
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential
- Broad experience managing complex older patients with frailty and multimorbidity.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Experience delivering teaching and supervision.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Subspecialty interest in frailty, dementia, falls, stroke, movement disorders, or community geriatrics.
- Evidence of service development or clinical leadership.
- Experience in research, audit, or simulation-based education.
