An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join a high-performing emergency department delivering comprehensive adult and paediatric emergency care in the South East. The department operates within a modern clinical environment and is committed to high-quality patient care, safety, service development, and continuous improvement.
The post offers strong mentoring support for newly appointed consultants, flexible annualised rota working, and opportunities to develop extended consultant roles aligned to individual interests.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-level emergency care across adult and paediatric emergency presentations.
- Provide clinical leadership on the shop floor, ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality patient care.
- Participate in the consultant rota, including weekends and out-of-hours working, on an annualised basis.
- Contribute to resuscitation leadership, complex case management, and patient flow optimisation.
- Support and supervise junior doctors, advanced practitioners, and multidisciplinary staff.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and high standards of professional practice.
Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement
- Participate actively in clinical governance, audit, incident investigation, and quality improvement programmes.
- Support reporting and review of critical incidents and near misses.
- Contribute to service redesign and pathway development.
Teaching, Supervision & Development
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
- Support departmental education and mentoring programmes.
- Maintain ongoing professional development and revalidation requirements.
Job Planning & Flexibility
- Participate in regular job plan review within the first six months and annually thereafter.
- Contribute to flexible rota models aligned with service expansion and workforce planning.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
- CCT in Emergency Medicine (or within 6 months), or
- CESR / European Community Rights.
- Appropriate higher specialist qualification.
- Current provider or instructor status in at least one life support course (ALS / ATLS / APLS / ETC).
- Revalidated or ready for revalidation.
Experience
Essential
- Extensive experience managing the full range of Emergency Medicine presentations across all age groups.
- Demonstrated ability to lead resuscitation and complex emergency care.
- Experience working within high-volume emergency departments.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
