Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Gastroenterology to join a large and dynamic consultant team delivering comprehensive gastrointestinal and hepatology services across Wales. The service operates at both district and tertiary levels, providing high-quality specialist care to a diverse patient population.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
-
Provide consultant-led gastroenterology services, including the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver disease.

Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients under your supervision in collaboration with consultant colleagues.

Participate in a weekend ward review rota and a 1:14 emergency endoscopy on-call rota (subject to service requirements).

Review all new gastroenterology and hepatology admissions daily as part of the consultant team.

Provide professional supervision and training for junior medical staff and trainees.

Participate in continuing professional development, clinical audit, appraisal, and revalidation.

Contribute to the delivery of domiciliary consultations where appropriate.

Undertake any additional agreed clinical duties aligned to service needs.
Teaching
-
Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, examinations, and training activities.

Contribute to postgraduate education programmes and curriculum delivery.

Support the organisation and delivery of speciality teaching.
Research
-
Participate actively in clinical research and initiate research projects where appropriate.

Contribute to publications and academic collaboration.
Management & Governance
-
Participate in service management, operational planning, and clinical leadership activities.

Work within agreed financial and operational frameworks.

Support waiting list management, service efficiency, and best practice governance.

Comply with organisational policies and procedures.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
-
Full registration on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology, or within 6 months of CCT at interview (portfolio pathway applicants must already be on the Specialist Register).

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable
-
MD or PhD.
Experience
Essential
-
Broad specialist training and experience in Gastroenterology.

JAG accreditation (or equivalent) in diagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy.

Evidence of safe independent endoscopy practice.
-
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
-
Experience in dye spray colonoscopy.

Bowel screening accreditation.
