An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Microbiologist to join a modern, well-equipped microbiology service in the East of England. The post offers an opportunity to contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of high-quality clinical microbiology, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention services within a progressive, multidisciplinary environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide expert microbiology advice to clinicians and primary care teams regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infection.
- Interpret, validate, and authorise laboratory results and ensure timely clinical communication.
- Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and clinical case discussions.
- Contribute to the on-call rota, providing microbiology and infection prevention advice.
- Develop, review, and authorise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with departmental colleagues.
- Participate in clinical audit programmes and service improvement initiatives.
- Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during annual leave where required.
Infection Prevention & Control
- Support the investigation, management, and prevention of communicable diseases.
- Work closely with Infection Prevention and Control teams to provide expert guidance on infection control measures and outbreak management.
Teaching & Training
- Supervise and train junior medical staff in microbiology and infection management.
- Participate in regular departmental clinical meetings focused on learning, guideline updates, and service development.
Management & Administration
- Contribute to departmental management and operational planning.
- Act responsibly regarding data governance and confidentiality requirements.
Audit & Research
- Participate in and contribute to audit and research activity supported by the organisation.
- Engage with ongoing clinical research projects where appropriate.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Formal training in Medical Microbiology or equivalent speciality training.
Desirable
- RCPath or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
Experience
Essential
- Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience in Microbiology or Infection specialities.
- Demonstrated experience in providing microbiology clinical advice and laboratory interpretation.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Experience contributing to audit and quality improvement.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical environments.
Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Strong speciality knowledge in Clinical Microbiology and Infection Management.
- Understanding of infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical governance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable
- Evidence of audit participation or research involvement.
