An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Staff Grade Doctor in Emergency Medicine to join a busy and well-supported Emergency Department within the South West region.
The Emergency Department manages approximately 40,000 attendances per year, providing exposure to the full spectrum of acute emergency presentations. The department operates a 24/7 service, supported by a strong consultant body, middle-grade doctors, junior trainees, and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
The post holder will work at a middle-grade level and, at times, will be expected to take operational responsibility for the department, including periods when a consultant is not on-site.
Main Clinical Duties
The post holder will be expected to:
- Deliver high-quality emergency care across the full range of acute medical and surgical presentations.
- Work as part of the middle-grade rota, providing early, late, and night cover across seven days.
- Supervise and support junior doctors, trainees, and medical students.
- Take responsibility for departmental leadership when the most senior doctor on shift, particularly during evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Review and action radiology and pathology results on designated days.
- Validate and complete discharge documentation.
- Participate in ED follow-up clinics as required.
Rota
- Self-rostering system that allows flexibility for annual and study leave.
- Covers early, late, and night shifts on a 7-day rota.
- No on-call commitment.
Clinical Governance and Professional Development
The post holder will:
- Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of evidence-based guidelines, protocols, and care pathways.
- Engage fully with appraisal, CPD, and revalidation requirements.
- Be allocated 1 PA for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) and a study leave allowance.
- Be supported by a nominated Educational / Clinical Supervisor.
Teaching and Training
- Participate in teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.
- Support appraisal and training needs of supervised staff.
- Contribute to departmental education and training activities.
Essential Qualifications
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Essential Experience
- At least 12 months’ Emergency Medicine experience at Staff Grade / Senior or equivalent level.
- Minimum of 4 years postgraduate clinical experience, with at least 2 years in a relevant speciality training programme or equivalent.
- Experience working autonomously within an Emergency Department environment.
Essential Specialist Skills
- ALS provider status (or equivalent)
- ATLS / ETC provider status (or equivalent)
- APLS / EPLS provider status (or equivalent)
- MRCEM / FRCEM (or equivalent)
- MRCP
Management and Personal Skills
- Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills with patients, relatives, colleagues, and senior stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership when acting as the senior clinician on shift.
- Experience in teaching, training, and supervision of junior staff.
- Highly motivated, adaptable, and resilient in a fast-paced emergency setting.
