An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Stroke Physician to join a large, well-established and forward-thinking Stroke Service within the East Midlands.
The post holder will work across the full spectrum of stroke care, contributing to hyper-acute stroke services, acute stroke management, intensive rehabilitation, and ongoing stroke rehabilitation. The service operates on a 24/7 consultant-delivered model and has a strong reputation for clinical excellence, service development, education, and research.
The successful applicant will join a committed multidisciplinary consultant team and play a key role in the continued development and optimisation of regional stroke pathways, ensuring delivery of high-quality, evidence-based stroke care.
Clinical Duties
The appointee will fulfil duties in accordance with an agreed Job Plan and will be expected to:
- Provide consultant-level care for patients admitted with hyper-acute, acute, and elective stroke presentations.
- Deliver specialist expertise in hyper-acute stroke care, including assessment and management of patients requiring thrombolysis.
- Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive elective and emergency stroke service.
- Maintain continuing responsibility for patients under their care and ensure safe, effective functioning of the stroke service.
- Provide reciprocal cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary stroke pathway development and complex clinical decision-making.
Governance and Audit
The post holder will be expected to:
- Actively participate in clinical governance, including audit, incident reporting, complaint review, risk management, CPD, and evidence-based practice.
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the stroke service.
Teaching and Education
The service is a major centre for undergraduate and postgraduate education. The successful candidate will:
- Play an active role in teaching and supervision of medical students, junior doctors, and multidisciplinary staff.
- Support training, appraisal, and professional development activities.
Appropriate SPA time will be allocated to support educational responsibilities.
Research
The stroke service has a strong and active research portfolio, including participation in national and international hyper-acute and rehabilitation stroke trials.
The post holder will be encouraged to:
- Participate in research activity and clinical trials.
- Hold or obtain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
- Act as an investigator or principal investigator where appropriate.
Other Duties
The appointee may undertake additional roles alongside their clinical duties, subject to discussion and agreement with service leadership to ensure service delivery is maintained and job plans are appropriately adjusted.
Essential Qualifications
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise
- Full MRCP
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via:
- CCT (expected within 6 months of interview), or
- CESR route
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience, with demonstrable NHS exposure
Essential Clinical Experience
- Extensive experience in Stroke Medicine, including NHS experience in Stroke and/or Neurology.
- Experience in hyper-acute stroke care, including training and competence in thrombolysis.
- Experience in General Internal Medicine, with additional expertise in Geriatric Medicine, is considered advantageous.
- Ability to manage complex stroke patients independently at the consultant level.
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and quality improvement activity.
- Ability to teach, supervise, and support junior medical staff effectively.

CESR Support
- Applicants applying via the CESR route are welcome. The service has prior experience supporting clinicians through CESR within Stroke Medicine and will provide appropriate informal guidance and clinical exposure to support competency development, in line with service needs.
