An opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant Physician with a special interest in Stroke Medicine to join an established and expanding stroke service in the South West. The service delivers comprehensive hyper-acute, acute, rehabilitation, and outpatient neurovascular care within a robust 7-day service model, ensuring rapid diagnosis and timely therapeutic intervention.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary consultant-led team and play a key role in maintaining and developing high-quality stroke services, with opportunities to contribute to education, research, audit, and service innovation.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led care for patients admitted to the Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit, acute stroke wards, and rehabilitation units.
  • Deliver 7-day consultant availability for stroke inpatient care and neurovascular outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in stroke ward rounds, MDT meetings, and case reviews.
  • Support stroke rehabilitation pathways in collaboration with community services.
  • Work closely with a well-established multidisciplinary team, including specialist nurses, therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, and advanced practitioners.
  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision to junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
  • Participate in clinical governance, including audit, quality improvement, and risk management.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training, and appraisal activities.
  • Support service development and pathway redesign within stroke and related specialities.
  • Maintain professional standards in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice.

Additional specialist interests in Elderly Care, Neurology, Acute Medicine, or Clinical Pharmacology can be accommodated.
 

On-Call and Cross-Cover

  • Participation in the stroke on-call and emergency cover rota is required.
  • Opportunities exist for suitably experienced candidates to participate in Acute Medicine on-call.
  • Consultants may be required to work flexibly across sites to meet service needs.
 

Job Planning, Appraisal, and Professional Development

  • Job planning and appraisal are conducted at regular intervals and are aligned with the national consultant's terms and conditions.
  • The organisation is committed to supporting annual appraisal, revalidation, and CPD, with protected time and financial support.
  • A structured mentoring and induction programme is available for new appointees.
  • Time off in lieu may be considered for additional duties undertaken.
 

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Complete GMC registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR, or equivalent (or within 6 months of completion at interview).
  • Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience at consultant or senior speciality level.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification or higher degree.
 

Experience

Essential

  • High level of clinical competence and experience in Stroke Medicine.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.

Desirable

  • Experience in business planning or service development.
  • Interest in developing links with Acute Medicine or Primary Care.
 

Research, Teaching, and Governance

Essential

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical practice.
  • Commitment to clinical audit, governance, and continuous improvement.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience supervising postgraduate research.
  • Teaching of non-medical healthcare professionals.
