An opportunity has arisen to appoint a Fixed Term Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with General Medicine to join a progressive, clinically led organisation within the North West. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality respiratory and general medical services and will be encouraged to develop a subspecialty interest that complements the existing consultant team and service needs.
Principal Job Purpose
- To provide, in conjunction with consultant colleagues, a comprehensive Respiratory and General Medicine service.
- To contribute to the ongoing development of respiratory services across the region, including outreach activity where required.
- To work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes and population lung health.
A mutually agreed timetable will reflect the interests of the appointee, the expertise of existing consultants, and service requirements. This job description may evolve as future service development progresses.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-led care in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine, including inpatient and outpatient activity.
- Participate in respiratory service provision across multiple sites within the region, as required.
- Contribute to acute and general medical admissions through participation in the consultant on-call rota.
- Provide senior clinical decision-making and leadership within the multidisciplinary team.
- Support flexible deployment of professional time across clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, audit, and continuing medical education.
- Participate actively in clinical audit, service improvement, and governance activities.
Out-of-Hours and On-Call Commitments
- Participation in the Consultant General Medicine on-call rota, which attracts an availability supplement.
- The on-call consultant is supported by a whole junior medical team, including registrars, core trainees, ACCS trainees, GP trainees, and foundation doctors.
- 24/7 speciality support is available from cardiology, renal, intensive care, stroke (via telemedicine), and endoscopy services.
Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Medical Degree.
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
- Completion of Higher Specialist Training (CCT) in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine, or evidence of equivalent competence.
- Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience at any grade.
Desirable
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Additional postgraduate qualifications or relevant training.
