An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Nephrologist to join a well-established medical service within the South East region. The post offers a balanced consultant job plan, strong support for professional development, and the opportunity to contribute to high-quality renal services within a multidisciplinary environment.
The successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership in Nephrology, contribute to inpatient and outpatient renal services, and participate actively in service development, education, audit, and governance.
Proposed Job Plan
- Standard 10 PA consultant contract for public work.
- 2 core SPAs allocated for CPD activities in line with AoMRC guidance.
- Most consultants will have an additional 1 SPA for agreed organisational activities.
- Indicative 1 in 2 rota covering urgent inpatient attending, referrals, and urgent laboratory work.
- Final job plan to be agreed with the Clinical Lead and Chief of Service and ratified by the Medical Director.
- Job plan reviewed annually and aligned with appraisal outcomes.
- A prospective job plan must be agreed upon within 3 months of commencement.
In the event of disagreement, job plan negotiations will be escalated to the Chief of Service in line with policy.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient nephrology care.
- Provide urgent renal input for referrals and laboratory findings as required.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary renal team to deliver safe and effective services.
- Participate in service development initiatives and quality improvement programmes.
- Contribute to clinical audit, risk management, and governance activities.
- Support teaching, training, and supervision of junior doctors and undergraduate students.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and uphold professional standards at all times.
- Engage in annual appraisal, revalidation, and continuing professional development.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Primary Medical Degree.
- MRCP or equivalent higher speciality qualification.
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (Renal Medicine) or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at interview.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience or equivalent clinical environment.
- Broad clinical experience in Nephrology.
- ALS certification.
- Evidence of training and/or experience as a CCDC.
- Broad IT competence.
- For non-UK-trained applicants, evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT is required.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).
- Experience in acute transplantation.
- Prior management or leadership responsibilities.
- Enthusiasm for teaching and education.
